Visueel is de Geekom AX8 Pro zeker een blikvanger. Geekom put uit zijn eigen portfolio en installeert een AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS. De AMD SoC zou voor een aanzienlijke toename in 3D-prestaties moeten zorgen, aangezien Geekom nog geen Meteor Lake processors heeft gebruikt. In de bovenste configuratie zijn 32 GB DDR5 RAM en een 2 TB SSD geïnstalleerd. We hebben in het verleden al meerdere keren gezien dat Geekom niet per se goedkope apparaten op de markt brengt. Dit is ook het geval met de Geekom AX8 Pro, die in de beste configuratie 999 euro kost. Dit is al een aanbieding, want de RRP van de fabrikant is 1.099 euro - een trotse prijs die Geekom voor dit apparaat vraagt. Voor 879 euro is de Geekom AX8 Pro met AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS32 GB RAM en 1 TB SSD iets goedkoper, maar nog steeds geen koopje.

Geekom zelf is waarschijnlijk zijn grootste concurrent, omdat er vaak aantrekkelijke aanbiedingen zijn voor iets oudere apparaten die technisch op hetzelfde niveau zitten als de Geekom AX8 Pro. De Geekom AX8 Pro moet zich in deze review ook bewijzen tegenover apparaten van andere fabrikanten.

De basis van de Geekom AX8 Pro is identiek aan de Geekom XT13 Pro die op zijn beurt de behuizing deelt met de Geekom XT12 Pro. Als AMD tegenhanger krijgt de Geekom AX8 Pro de kans om zijn prestaties te bewijzen met dezelfde compacte basis. De apparaten verschillen alleen visueel, want de behuizing van de Geekom AX8 Pro is blauw geverfd. De zilveren en witte onderdelen van de interne tegenhangers zijn, zoals gewoonlijk, van uitstekende kwaliteit en passen perfect bij elkaar. Er zijn echter kleurverschillen door de verschillende materialen. De behuizing is voornamelijk van metaal, hoewel het deksel en de onderkant van plastic zijn. Met slechts 548 gram is ons testapparaat licht van gewicht, en de Geekom is ook zeer ruimtebesparend wat betreft de voetafdruk (11,7 x 11,2 centimeter). De Geekom AX8 Pro kan direct aan een monitor worden bevestigd met behulp van de meegeleverde VESA-beugel.

Vergelijking grootte

Uitrusting

Als het aankomt op externe interfaces, kan de Geekom AX8 Pro niet helemaal concurreren met zijn Intel tegenhanger aka Geekom XT13 Pro. Op het eerste gezicht zijn er nauwelijks verschillen, maar bij nadere inspectie wordt duidelijk dat de Geekom AX8 Pro alleen een USB4 interface heeft. Dit is niet zo erg, want de uitbreidingsopties zijn er nog steeds. De Thunderbolt-functionaliteit is ook weggelaten. De Intel modellen (bijv. Intel NUC 13 Pro Desk Edition Kit), die ooit werd gelanceerd als de NUC-serie en nu door Asus op de markt wordt gebracht, bieden wel Thunderbolt-ondersteuning. De lay-out van de interface is identiek, en de Geekom AX8 Pro scoort ook punten in termen van aantallen ondanks het compacte ontwerp.

Communicatie

De Geekom AX8 Pro krijgt een bekende draadloze module die we al in andere Geekom mini PC's hebben aangetroffen. De MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E MT7922 WLAN module kan ook overweg met het nieuwere 6 GHz frequentiebereik als de router deze optie biedt. Volgens onze testresultaten is dit ook aan te raden, omdat de overdrachtsnelheden merkbaar beter zijn dan met een verbinding in het 5 GHz frequentiebereik. We gebruikten de Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 router voor de test. Als alternatief is er ook een RJ45-aansluiting met 2,5 Gbit/s beschikbaar voor de gebruiker.

Accessoires

De Geekom AX8 Pro wordt geleverd met een 120-watt voeding en een VESA-bevestiging inclusief montagemateriaal. De fabrikant levert geen andere accessoires mee, zoals een toetsenbord of muis.

Onderhoud

De Geekom AX8 Pro kan zonder grote obstakels vanaf de onderkant worden geopend: Er hoeven slechts vier kleine schroeven losgedraaid te worden. De bodemplaat dient ook als passief koelelement voor de SSD. Het RAM-geheugen en de massaopslag kunnen indien nodig worden vervangen. De Geekom AX8 Pro biedt echter geen upgrademogelijkheden meer. Als u de CPU ventilator wilt schoonmaken, moet u de printplaat en koeleenheid verwijderen. Met een beetje handigheid is dit echter geen probleem.

Duurzaamheid

De Geekom AX8 Pro is een zeer compacte mini-PC. Toch verpakt de fabrikant het apparaat met hanteerbare accessoires in een relatief grote doos. De afmetingen lijken erg op de verpakking van de Geekom XT13 Pro. De Geekom XT12 Pro werd daarentegen in een veel kleinere verpakking geleverd. De aanpak van Geekom bij ons testmodel is niet in overeenstemming met een verstandige duurzaamheid wat betreft de ruimte die nodig is voor verzending. Het apparaat zelf is voornamelijk gemaakt van metaal en plastic. We weten echter niet of de fabrikant speciaal gerecycled materiaal gebruikt voor de productie. Geekom krijgt lof voor de garantieperiode van 36 maanden.

Prestaties - Veel kracht dankzij AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS

De AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS is een high-end processor en biedt meer dan genoeg kracht voor de meeste toepassingen. Als u alleen rudimentaire kantoortaken moet uitvoeren, kunt u ook voor een minder krachtig apparaat kiezen. Als alternatief kan de Geekom AX8 Pro ook worden uitgerust met de iets zwakkere AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS beschikbaar is. Beide SoC's zijn native 8-cores en bieden 16 logische rekeneenheden. Wat betreft RAM is 32 GB DDR5 RAM altijd een goede keuze, hoewel er minstens 1 TB wordt geïnstalleerd voor massaopslag.

Testomstandigheden

We gebruiken het energieprofiel "Balanced" voor alle prestatietests met de Geekom AX8 Pro. Er waren alleen afwijkingen hiervan in het stroomverbruik en de geluidsmetingen volgens onze Testcriteria. In overeenstemming met de specificaties van de fabrikant laat Geekom de SoC met het laagste stroomverbruik werken. In cijfers betekent dit een vermogenslimiet van 45 watt onder continue belasting, hoewel tot 60 watt is toegestaan voor korte perioden. Het BIOS zelf is zeer eenvoudig en laat vrijwel geen wijzigingen toe. Wijzigingen aan de vermogenslimieten van de SoC en de toewijzing van RAM voor de iGPU zijn niet mogelijk. Alleen de voorinstellingen van de ventilator kunnen worden gewijzigd. De prestatiemodus is hier standaard geactiveerd.

Processor

De Geekom AX8 Pro is uitgerust met een AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS, die ook te vinden is in de Geekom A8. In een rechtstreeks duel moet de AX8 Pro echter zijn nederlaag toegeven aan de A8. Met een verschil van slechts twee procentpunten in de prestatiebeoordeling kunnen we echter stellen dat beide apparaten vrijwel identieke prestaties leveren. In de individuele tests kan de Geekom AX8 Pro het niet altijd winnen van zijn concurrenten. Vooral de Meteor Lake-aangedreven apparaten (Minisforum AtomMan X7 Ti en Acemagic F2A) kunnen zich duidelijk onderscheiden in de multi-core tests dankzij het hogere aantal fysieke kernen. Wat single-core prestaties betreft, zit de AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS echter op hetzelfde niveau als een Intel Core Ultra 9 185H

Cinebench R15 Multi loop

De Cinebench R15 duurloop is een extreem scenario en belast de processor met terugkerende duurtesten om te bepalen hoe goed het koelsysteem werkt. Geekom zelf specificeert een TDP van 45 watt. Dit kan alleen in het begin worden gehaald en daalt vanaf de tweede run. De continue belasting vermindert de prestaties van de AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS nog verder af. Vergeleken met de concurrenten is het eindresultaat erg ontnuchterend.

De systeemprestaties van de Geekom AX8 Pro zijn uitstekend en iets beter dan die van de vergelijkingsapparaten. Geen enkel apparaat maakt echter een grote fout. Zelfs de Geekom XT13 Pro die de achterhoede in de vergelijking vormt, leverde in onze test ook voldoende prestaties bij dagelijks gebruik.

DPC latenties

De Geekom AX8 Pro is niet overtuigend op het gebied van latentie. We documenteren vergelijkbaar hoge waarden met de Geekom XT13 Pro. Zelfs gewoon surfen op het internet resulteert in hoge DPC waarden. Het afspelen van de 4K testvideo en de korte stresstest hebben geen negatieve invloed op de DPC waarden. Het gebruik van de iGPU is merkbaar hoog met meer dan 60 procent tijdens het afspelen van video. De iGPU van de Geekom A7 werd in dezelfde test slechts voor 30 procent gebruikt. Een vergelijkbaar resultaat als de Geekom AX8 Pro werd al geleverd door de Geekom A8die we ook hebben getest in de configuratie met de AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS.

Massa-opslag

De Geekom AX8 Pro krijgt een SSD met 2 TB opslagruimte in de bovenste configuratie. Om precies te zijn heeft Geekom hier een Acer N7000 geïnstalleerd. Fysiek is de massaopslag optimaal aangesloten, wat resulteerde in hoge overdrachtsnelheden in de test. Desondanks kan de SSD in de Geekom AX8 Pro niet de prestaties leveren die we met de Geekom XT13 Pro. Er is geen merkbaar verschil in prestaties tijdens normaal gebruik. De stresstest laat uitstekende prestaties zien. Op een kleine uitzondering na hebben we stabiele leesprestaties gedocumenteerd. De passieve koeling is voldoende om de warmte snel genoeg af te voeren. Er kan slechts één apparaat voor massaopslag in de Geekom AX8 Pro geïnstalleerd worden. Dit onderscheidt ons testexemplaar van de Intel-gebaseerde Geekom XT13 Pro, die met in totaal twee apparaten voor massaopslag kan worden uitgerust.

De AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS biedt de AMD Radeon 780M - een zeer krachtige iGPU, die al in de Ryzen 7000 SoC's werd gebruikt. De prestaties zijn echter niet significant veranderd. Het hangt er eerder vanaf welke vermogenslimiet de fabrikant aan de SoC toekent en hoe krachtig de ingebouwde koeleenheid is. Hoewel de Geekom AX8 Pro niet noodzakelijkerwijs een zeer krachtige koeleenheid biedt, zijn de resultaten op het gebied van 3D-prestaties relatief goed. Ons testexemplaar presteert vaak beter dan de Aoostar GEM12 die een aanzienlijk krachtigere koeleenheid heeft. We zien echter ook dat een nieuwere SoC geen garantie is voor betere prestaties, aangezien de Geekom AE7 soms betere resultaten kan leveren. In de prestatievergelijking zien we onder andere ook dat AMD met de Radeon 780M beter presteert dan de Intel Arc 8 met de Radeon 780M.

Gamingprestaties

De goede prestaties van de AMD Radeon 780M die we in de synthetische benchmarks hebben gedocumenteerd, zijn ook duidelijk in de gamingtests. Er moet echter wel opgemerkt worden dat dit een iGPU is en niet kan tippen aan apparaten met speciale grafische adapters. In een directe vergelijking met zijn concurrenten bevestigt de Geekom AX8 Pro grotendeels de prestaties van de AMD Radeon 780M. We hebben een klein prestatienadeel in nieuwere games, wat te wijten is aan het lage stroomverbruik van de SoC.

Geekom AX8 Pro prestatiecontrole met een Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti

Zoals al vermeld bij de aansluitingen, heeft de Geekom AX8 Pro een USB4-poort, die het gebruik van externe grafische kaarten mogelijk maakt. We hebben enkele tests uitgevoerd in combinatie met de Razer Core X en een Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti gemaakt. De tests onthullen een aanzienlijke toename in prestaties in vergelijking met de AMD Radeon 780M. De Geekom AX8 Pro levert bijna identieke prestaties als de vergelijkbare apparaten in de synthetische tests. In de gamingtests hebben de AMD-apparaten een aantal duidelijke voordelen.

In deze combinatie kan de mini PC veel games aan die voorheen alleen met aanzienlijke beperkingen speelbaar waren. Soms levert de combinatie ook genoeg prestaties om van games in 1.440p te genieten zonder details te hoeven opofferen.

Uitstoot

Geluidsemissies

Door zijn compacte ontwerp is de Geekom AX8 Pro uitgerust met een kleine koeleenheid. Als hij stationair draait, werkt hij geruisloos, wat uitstekend is. Dit verandert echter snel onder belasting, en met 50 dB(A) hebben we een geluidsdrukniveau gemeten dat niet genegeerd kan worden. Het hoogfrequente ventilatorgeluid draagt ertoe bij dat het volume subjectief als nog luider wordt ervaren. Het prestatieprofiel voor de ventilatorsnelheid is standaard geactiveerd in het BIOS. Als alternatief kunt u kiezen uit twee andere opties. We hebben ook een stresstest uitgevoerd met het stille ventilatorprofiel en konden slechts een kleine verbetering meten. Met 48 dB(A) is het apparaat nog steeds aanzienlijk luider dan sommige concurrenten. Het ontwerp, in combinatie met de krachtige hardware, is een groot obstakel als het gaat om het bedrijfsgeluid.

Temperatuur

We hebben geen kritische oppervlaktetemperaturen kunnen vaststellen bij stationair draaien of onder belasting. Aan de zijkanten wordt frisse lucht aangezogen, die aan de achterkant weer uit de behuizing wordt geblazen. De temperaturen aan de achterkant zijn overeenkomstig iets hoger. Met de AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS bereikten we net geen 93 °C in de stresstest, wat nog geen reden tot bezorgdheid is. Volgens AMD is de SoC gespecificeerd met een maximale bedrijfstemperatuur tot 100 °C. De maximale waarde die in onze test werd bereikt, wordt slechts korte tijd bereikt, aangezien de SoC maximaal 60 watt mag verbruiken. In de Prime95-stresstest stabiliseert de gemiddelde CPU-temperatuur zich op 87 °C, hoewel er een permanent stroomverbruik van 45 watt wordt bereikt.

Stroomverbruik

De Geekom AX8 Pro verrast met goede resultaten op het gebied van energieverbruik. Ons testexemplaar is echter niet een van de zuinigste apparaten. De Geekom AX8 Pro verbruikt meer energie dan zijn concurrenten, vooral in ruststand. Het gemiddelde stroomverbruik onder belasting ligt op 76,4 watt, wat ongeveer gelijk is in vergelijking met apparaten die ook met AMD SoC's zijn uitgerust. Er wordt maximaal 99,1 watt gevraagd van de 120 watt voedingseenheid.

Geekom AX8 Pro in review - geleverd door Geekom

De Geekom AX8 Pro is gebaseerd op een NUC-platform en beschikt over de AMD Ryzen 9 8945HSdie veel prestaties levert. Het compacte ontwerp staat echter een betere prestatieontwikkeling met een lager geluidsniveau in de weg. Het ontwerp van de Geekom AX8 Pro is niet fundamenteel nieuw, aangezien andere apparaten op dezelfde basis ook vergelijkbare zwakke punten hebben laten zien in termen van emissies. Qua kleur onderscheidt de Geekom AX8 Pro zich duidelijk van identieke apparaten met Intel-processors. Of u het blauwe kleurenconcept mooi vindt, is echter een kwestie van mening. Om een frisse wind door het portfolio van de fabrikant te laten waaien, zou Geekom moeten overwegen of ze met het ontwerp door willen gaan. Een compacte mini-pc met veel vermogen is zeker een goede aanpak. Het dagelijkse achtergrondgeluid op het bureau is echter allesbehalve aangenaam. De concurrenten laten zien dat het ook anders kan als u zich niet per se op het compacte ontwerp richt.

De Geekom AX8 Pro is een stijlvolle mini-pc met geweldige prestaties. Om de concurrentie bij te houden, heeft hij iets meer nodig dan alleen een nieuw laagje verf.

Al met al is de Geekom AX8 Pro een geweldige mini PC die te veel prestaties biedt voor eenvoudige kantoorgebruikers. Het iets zwakkere model op basis van de AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS zou een goed alternatief kunnen zijn, dat ook iets gemakkelijker is voor de portemonnee. Geekom maakt een paar compromissen als het gaat om externe aansluitingen. De Geekom AX8 Pro biedt echter alle belangrijke aansluitingen. Er is zelfs een USB4-interface aanwezig. De Geekom AX8 Pro is echter nog ver verwijderd van perfecte connectiviteit. Veel mini-pc's zijn al uitgerust met twee USB4-poorten en een OCuLink-aansluiting. Thunderbolt-ondersteuning is ook niet beschikbaar. Als u hiervan afhankelijk bent, moet u de huidige Asus NUC 14 Pro apparaten eens nader bekijken.

Dit zijn zeker allemaal punten van kritiek op hoog niveau. In verhouding tot de huidige aankoopprijs van 999 euro (RRP: 1.099 euro) zijn de kritiekpunten echter gerechtvaardigd. Iedereen die zoveel geld uitgeeft aan een mini-PC zal waarschijnlijk geen compromissen willen sluiten. Bovendien zijn de concurrenten vaak goedkoper. Eerst en vooral is er de Minisforum AtomMan X7 Ti genoemd worden.
