Onlangs hebben we de kleinere Aoostar GEM10 en nu zijn we klaar om de Aoostar GEM12 te testen. Visueel behoort de GEM12 duidelijk tot de Aoostar familie. Vergeleken met de Aoostar GEM10 is de GEM12 iets groter. In de configuratie voor topprestaties, die de basis vormt voor deze test, is een AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS gebruikt. Als alternatief is de Aoostar GEM12 ook verkrijgbaar met AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS of AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX processoren. De laatste kan om technische redenen alleen DDR5 4.800 MT/s aan, hoewel de twee Ryzen 7-modellen met DDR5 5.600 MT/s werken.

Het testapparaat met 32 GB RAM en 1 TB SSD kost minstens 649 US dollar - een prijs die gerechtvaardigd is en niet buitensporig lijkt als u naar de technische gegevens kijkt in vergelijking met de concurrenten. De Aoostar GEM12 is ook verkrijgbaar als barebone versie voor 499 US dollar. Als u direct 64 GB RAM nodig hebt, moet u een budget van 749 US dollar vragen. Wij denken dat dit op dit moment ook een redelijke prijs is.

In de test moet de Aoostar GEM12 het opnemen tegen de huidige mini-pc's. We kijken onder andere ook hoe goed de mini-pc het doet tegen duurdere rivalen. De Aoostar GEM12 heeft echter een zeer serieuze concurrent in de vorm van de Aoostar GEM10, die ook aanzienlijk goedkoper is. De GEM-modellen van Aoostar zijn visueel vergelijkbaar. Met 13 x 13 centimeter neemt de Aoostar GEM12 iets meer ruimte in op het bureau dan de Aoostar GEM10 (10,7 x 10,7 centimeter). Op de grafiek kunt u zien dat sommige apparaten nog meer ruimte innemen. Met een hoogte van 6 centimeter zijn de Aoostar apparaten iets dikker dan hun concurrenten. Qua materiaalkeuze zien we een goede combinatie van plastic en aluminium. Dit laatste wordt voornamelijk gebruikt voor de behuizing, waardoor de Aoostar GEM12 ook een uitstekende haptische indruk maakt. De onderkant is daarentegen van plastic, wat bij de meeste apparaten het geval is. Er zit ook een klein plastic element op de bovenkant, dat alleen maar visuele waarde aan het apparaat toevoegt. Ondanks de hoogwaardige materialen is de Aoostar GEM12 niet bijzonder zwaar. Onze weegschaal geeft slechts iets meer dan 650 gram aan. De voedingseenheid zelf weegt 278 gram en is daarmee ongeveer even zwaar als de meeste andere mini-pc's in deze prestatieklasse.

Aoostar heeft ook een GEM12 Pro in zijn portfolio, die is uitgerust met een klein scherm en een vingerafdrukscanner. Helaas beschikt het niet-Pro model hier niet over. Aoostar biedt twee kleuropties, zoals u kunt zien op de foto's van de fabrikant. Qua prijs is er een verschil van 20 US dollar tussen het zwarte en het zilveren model in het voordeel van de zilveren versie.

Vergelijking grootte

Kenmerken - USB4 en OCuLink zijn aan boord

De aansluitingen bevinden zich alleen aan de voor- en achterkant. Qua aantallen is de Aoostar GEM12 niet overdreven goed uitgerust en is hier eerder gemiddeld: Er zijn in totaal vier USB Type-A aansluitingen, waarvan er twee echter alleen de langzame 2.0 standaard leveren. Bovendien is er altijd een USB-C aansluiting nodig voor de voeding. Er is tenminste USB4 en zelfs OCuLink geïnstalleerd. Net als bij de Aoostar GEM10hebben we kritiek op de locatie van de OCuLink-poort, die naar onze mening beter aan de achterkant geplaatst zou kunnen worden. Aan de achterkant zien we ook een HDMI 2.1 en een DisplayPort 1.4 voor beelduitvoer. Hier zijn ook twee netwerkaansluitingen te vinden.

Er is één belangrijk punt om op te merken bij het gebruik van de OCuLink interface: De poort is niet hot-swappable, wat betekent dat de mini-PC uitgeschakeld moet worden voordat er een eGPU wordt aangesloten. Hetzelfde geldt voor het verwijderen van apparaten die via OCuLink zijn aangesloten. Defecten veroorzaakt door onjuist gebruik vallen niet onder de garantie van de fabrikant.

Communicatie

Een Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 module is verantwoordelijk voor de draadloze communicatie in de Aoostar GEM12. De WLAN-module kan zowel 2,4 als 5 GHz frequenties aan en behaalde acceptabele resultaten in de test. Ons testexemplaar behoort daarom tot het goede middenveld. Voor deze test hebben we de Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 router gebruikt. Voor de overdracht van grote hoeveelheden gegevens raden we aan om een kabelverbinding te gebruiken. Hier is de Aoostar GEM12 uitgerust met twee RJ45-aansluitingen - elk 2,5 GBit/s.

Accessoires

De relatief kleine doos bevat de Aoostar GEM12 samen met de 120-watt voedingseenheid en een snelstartgids. Er is ook een HDMI-aansluitkabel en een VESA-bevestiging met schroeven. De fabrikant levert ook twee passieve SSD-koelers met thermische pads en een set rubberen voetjes als extra accessoires.

Onderhoud

Aangezien de Aoostar GEM12 onder andere als barebone-versie wordt aangeboden, is het belangrijk dat het apparaat gemakkelijk te openen is. Om bij de SSD- of RAM-sleuven te komen, hoeft alleen de onderkant verwijderd te worden. De vier schroeven waarmee het deksel aan de behuizing vastzit, bevinden zich onder de rubberen voetjes. Wees voorzichtig bij het openen van het deksel om de WLAN-antennes niet te beschadigen. Er zit ook een kleine ventilator aan de onderkant. Na het verwijderen van de bodemplaat zijn de twee SSD-sleuven en de twee SO-DIMM-sleuven gemakkelijk toegankelijk. In ons testsysteem is nog één M.2-2280 slot vrij voor een extra datadrager.

Prestaties - Altijd acht cores en 16 threads in de Aoostar GEM12

De Aoostar GEM12 is een compacte krachtpatser en biedt acht kernen met 16 threads in elke configuratie. In de test wijden we ons aan de AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS - het snelste model dat momenteel in de GEM12 is geïnstalleerd. U kunt ook overschakelen naar de AMD Ryzen 7 7840HSof de AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX. Uitgerust met 32 GB RAM en een SSD van 1 TB kan de Aoostar GEM12 ook geheugenintensieve taken aan. Volgens de fabrikant kan er maximaal 128 GB snel DDR5 RAM worden geïnstalleerd.

Testomstandigheden

We gebruikten het energieprofiel "High performance" voor alle prestatietests met dit apparaat. Daarnaast waren er geen wijzigingen in het BIOS, dus alle waarden werden bepaald volgens de fabrieksinstellingen.

Processor

De AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS is gebaseerd op de Zen4-architectuur en combineert acht native rekenkernen, die voor een hoge werksnelheid zorgen. De Aoostar GEM12 kan echter niet wezenlijk beter presteren dan zijn concurrenten. Samen met de AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS levert de Acemagic AM18 ongeveer dezelfde prestaties, hoewel een AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX ongeveer tien procentpunten langzamer is in onze beoordeling. Deze twee processors zijn interessant naast de AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS, omdat de GEM12 mini-pc ook met deze SoC's verkrijgbaar is.

Als we kijken naar het topmodel van Intel - Core 9 Ultra 185H - dat geïnstalleerd is in de Minisforum AtomMan X7 Ti, is er op het eerste gezicht geen verschil in prestaties. In de afzonderlijke tests levert het Intel-model echter bijna 10 tot 15 procent meer multi-thread prestaties.

De fabrikant adverteert met een maximaal stroomverbruik van 70 watt, dat is opgeslagen als de prestatiemodus in het BIOS. De gebalanceerde modus met een maximum van 65 watt is de standaardinstelling. Er is ook een optie voor de stille modus, wat betekent dat de processor slechts 54 watt beschikbaar heeft tijdens piekprestaties. We hebben alle tests in gebalanceerde modus uitgevoerd. In de prestatiemodus kan de AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS ongeveer 5 procent meer multi-thread prestaties leveren

DPC latenties

De gedocumenteerde DPC-waarden zijn iets hoger voor de Aoostar GEM12. Een blik op het vergelijkingsoverzicht laat zien dat sommige apparaten aanzienlijk slechtere resultaten leverden. We bereikten de maximale waarde echter pas kort na het starten van het afspelen van de 4K testvideo. Er zijn ook een paar dropped frames, maar deze staan het plezier van de film niet in de weg. Tijdens het afspelen bereikt de iGPU-belasting 64 procent, wat relatief hoog is.

Massa-opslag

De Aoostar GEM12 is uitgerust met een 1 TB SSD van Crucial. In vergelijking zien we een uitstekend resultaat, waarmee ons testapparaat de eerste plaats kan bemachtigen. Aoostar installeert actieve koeling in de GEM12, maar deze bestaat slechts uit één ventilator. Deze combinatie is echter niet voldoende om de prestaties onder belasting stabiel te houden. Het prestatieverlies is echter zeer klein en nauwelijks merkbaar. Twee NVMe SSD's met een lengte van 80 millimeter kunnen in het apparaat worden geïnstalleerd.

Degenen die de Aoostar GEM12 gebruiken met AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX kunnen zich qua prestaties beter oriënteren op de Aoostar GEM10.

Aoostar GEM12 met de GPD G1 eGPU in de prestatiecontrole

Aoostar installeert een OCuLink-interface in de GEM12, die voornamelijk beschikbaar is voor het gebruik van externe grafische kaarten. USB4 is ook beschikbaar, hoewel de bandbreedte van de OCuLink-verbinding beter is en ongeveer 10 procent meer 3D-prestaties mogelijk maakt. We hebben de prestaties eens getest in combinatie met de GPD G1 (AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT) en een aantal synthetische en gaming benchmarks uitgevoerd.

De prestaties in combinatie met de GPD G1 eGPU zijn beter dan alle andere apparaten die we tot nu toe in deze combinatie hebben getest. Het verschil in prestaties ten opzichte van de Aoostar GEM10 of de Minisforum AtomMan x7 Ti is verwaarloosbaar. Veel games kunnen nu in hoge kwaliteit worden gespeeld.

Geluidsemissies

Hoewel Aoostar twee ventilatoren in de GEM12 heeft geïnstalleerd, is het apparaat aanzienlijk stiller dan alle andere apparaten in deze review. In de ruststand hebben we een geluidsdrukniveau van slechts 27,6 dB(A) gemeten. Bij gemiddelde belasting bereikt de Aoostar GEM12 36 dB(A) en is hij stil hoorbaar. Het maximale volume bereikten we in de stresstest met iets meer dan 38 dB(A). Het aangename ventilatorgeluid, dat door zijn lage frequentie niet storend neigt te zijn, moet positief benadrukt worden.

Temperatuur

De metalen behuizing verdeelt de resulterende warmte vrij goed. We documenteren een gebied aan de bovenkant als het warmste punt, waar we ongeveer 46 °C aan het oppervlak meten. De onderdelen worden van boven en onder geventileerd. Twee ventilatoren zuigen hier frisse lucht aan. De onderste ventilator voorziet echter alleen de massaopslag en het RAM van verse lucht, terwijl de ventilator aan de bovenkant de processor koelt. Dit koelconcept werkt, en met een maximum van 84,4 °C is er niets op de temperatuur aan te merken. De vooraf gedefinieerde prestatiegrenzen worden bereikt; de volledige prestaties van de AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS kunnen permanent worden gehandhaafd, zelfs tijdens de stresstest.

Helaas wint de Aoostar GEM12 niet de kroon op het gebied van efficiëntie. Hoewel de energiebehoefte in de ruststand nog redelijk is met 8 tot 14,6 watt, neemt deze onder belasting aanzienlijk toe. Met 73,9 watt heeft ons testexemplaar aanzienlijk meer energie nodig dan de Minisforum AtomMan X7 Tidie qua prestaties op hetzelfde niveau zit. Op korte termijn moet de 120 watt voeding tot 95 watt kunnen leveren, wat in de praktijk geen problemen oplevert.

De Aoostar GEM12 in een review: geleverd door Aoostar

De Aoostar GEM12 is ideaal in combinatie met de AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS en is een krachtige mini-PC met veel prestaties. Samen met 32 GB RAM en 1 TB opslagruimte is de compacte computer ideaal voor vele taken. Qua relatieve prestaties kan de Aoostar GEM12 zich echter niet onderscheiden van zijn concurrenten, aangezien deze ook vergelijkbare goede prestaties leveren. Visueel heeft Aoostar op ons testapparaat geen gimmicks toegepast. Als u nog steeds waarde hecht aan deze kleine details, kunt u een kijkje nemen bij het Pro-model in de serie, want dit is uitgerust met een klein scherm aan de bovenkant. Wij zien hier echter de noodzaak niet van in.

De Aoostar GEM12 levert indrukwekkende prestaties met AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS. Een moderne interface en een hoogwaardige behuizing met krachtige koeling zijn een goed verkoopargument, dat hand in hand gaat met een eerlijke prijs.

De behuizing van de Aoostar GEM12 is perfect afgewerkt en de materiaalkeuze is al even uitstekend. De mix van aluminium en plastic is goed en versterkt de look en feel van het apparaat. Wat de aankoopprijs betreft, is de Aoostar GEM12 aanzienlijk beter gepositioneerd dan sommige andere mini-pc's in deze prestatieklasse. Dit geldt ook voor de connectiviteit van de Aoostar GEM12. Met USB4 en OCuLink heeft de fabrikant twee moderne interfaces geïnstalleerd die een aankoopbeslissing zeker kunnen beïnvloeden. Aoostar kan dit echter niet claimen als een uniek verkoopargument, aangezien Minisforum de OCuLink-aansluiting al in enkele van zijn modellen heeft geïntegreerd. De combinatie met de externe grafische kaart leverde echter de beste prestaties met de Aoostar GEM12.

Een ander positief aspect van de Aoostar GEM12 is het ingebouwde koelsysteem: onder volledige belasting is de mini-pc aanzienlijk stiller dan de concurrenten die we hier hebben getest. De prestaties van de AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS kunnen de hele tijd stabiel worden gehouden. Aoostar maakt een klein foutje met de koeling van de SSD. Ondanks actieve koeling is er een minimaal prestatieverlies onder belasting. De Aoostar GEM10 was in staat om stabielere SSD-prestaties te leveren met een massievere koeleenheid. Een ander klein zwak punt is de prestatie van de draadloze verbinding. We begrijpen niet helemaal waarom de fabrikant geen Wi-Fi 6E heeft geïnstalleerd, aangezien de Aoostar is uitgerust met moderne aansluitingen zoals USB4 en OCuLink. Gelukkig is de draadloze module niet permanent geïnstalleerd en kan deze worden vervangen. Bovendien heeft de gebruiker nog steeds de beschikking over twee 2,5 GBit interfaces, wat niet noodzakelijkerwijs de standaard is voor mini-pc's.

De Aoostar GEM12 is rechtstreeks verkrijgbaar bij , de fabrikant in drie varianten, de barebone versie begint bij $499. Gebruikers kunnen de mini-pc ook via Amazon kopen.
