Samsung Galaxy S24 FE review - Fans have redefined the Galaxy smartphone
Price drop par excellence.
The Galaxy S24 FE is big, colorful and cheaper than its sister models, the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus. In some cases, the Samsung phone is on par with flagship devices, but in others, not so much. In our review, we clarify whether Samsung has tweaked the right areas.Marcus Herbrich, 👁 Daniel Schmidt (vertaald door DeepL / Ninh Duy) Published 🇺🇸 🇩🇪 ...
Samsung Galaxy S24 FE verdict: Placed in the mid-range segment by the fans
As an additional device in the Galaxy lineup, the Fan Edition would have made more sense at the launch of the S series. Big-screen lovers wouldn't have had to fork out as much and would only have to live with more subtle savings measures in everyday situations. In our opinion, when it comes to the S24 FE, Samsung has cut costs in the right areas, whether it's the minimally modified Exynos chipset, fewer frequency bands or doing without ultrasound technology in the fingerprint sensor. Even with the camera lenses situated away from the main camera and the slow UFS storage, these savings are less significant than expected.
However, we doubt that fans of the Galaxy S series would have desired the Galaxy S24 FE's thick bezels and the somewhat eye-straining screen flicker. Anyone regarding these issues as dealbreakers should take a closer look at the Xiaomi 14T Pro.
Since the price of a Galaxy S24 FE dropped very quickly after launch - at under $580, it already sits in the mid-range price bracket - the high RRP and late introduction to the market mean it struggles to find relevance compared to a Galaxy S24 Plus. However, what remains is an enticing Galaxy smartphone with very long update support, an excellent main camera, and numerous premium features, making it a package that is difficult to top in this newly-defined price range.

Price and availability
With an RRP of $649, the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE has been available since the beginning of October on online stores such as Amazon or the manufacturer itself. However, the market price has already settled to around $100 below the RRP during the review period.

The youngest member of the Galaxy S24 series comes as a Fan Edition, a device now already in its third generation. The Galaxy S24 FE has positioned itself as a cheaper alternative to the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+, although the dimensions are more in line with Samsung's Plus model. The basis of the FE series is still 128 GB of storage for an RRP of $649, but Samsung is only looking for an additional $50 for the 256 GB version. Read on as we uncover where the manufacturer has cut costs with its Fan Edition to hit the low price point.
Samsung Galaxy S24 FE specificaties
Case - The Galaxy S24 FE has an IP rating
From a visual standpoint, there are hardly any differences between the FE model and the Galaxy S24+. However, one noticeable difference is the thick bezels which frame the 6.7-inch screen, and this has a negative impact on the screen-to-body ratio. In this area, the Galaxy S24 FE only comes in at 88 percent. The Samsung phone is waterproof thanks to IP68 certification.
In addition to our blue variant, Samsung also offers a yellow, black and green version. However, compared to the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung has opted for a glossy design that magically attracts fingerprints. By contrast, the fit and finish is of a quality you would associate with a high-end smartphone. The Gorilla Glass Victus found on the front and rear sides also feels premium. Nevertheless, weighing in at 213 grams, the FE model is noticeably and surprisingly heavier than the Galaxy S24+ given its smaller battery capacity.
Features - The Galaxy S24 FE has fast USB 3.2 storage
The Galaxy S24 FE offers extensive features such as Bluetooth 5.3, USB OTG, and NFC, as well as Miracast and Samsung DeX, although it does lack the ultra-wideband chip found in the flagship fraction. The Samsung Knox security platform is, however, on board. The FE model also comes with the fast USB standard (3.2 Gen. 1), which supports wired image output to either HDMI or DisplayPort interfaces. In our copy test with the Samsung 980 Pro (M2.SSD hard drive), the USB port achieved high transfer speeds of 359 MB/s. The connected storage media can be formatted with NTFS (read-only) or exFAT.
Software - Long updates for the Samsung phone
There are no compromises when it comes to the Fan Edition's software. The Galaxy S24 FE is home to Android 14 as well as the in-house user interface, OneUI 6.1 with Galaxy AI. The manufacturer promises the same 7-year operating system and security updates as the Galaxy S24 Ultra. According to Samsung, security patches will be rolled out monthly, although for how long remains unclear. At the time of review, Android security patches are from October 2024, making them very up-to-date.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 FE has access to all of the current Galaxy AI functions, such as Circle to Search or Live translation, as well as Samsung's generative photo and video editing.
Sustainability
According to the manufacturer, the Samsung smartphone consists of components made from various recycled materials, including reused plastic, aluminum, glass materials and rare earth. The packaging is made of 100 percent recycled paper.
Communication and GNSS - The Galaxy S24 FE has 5G
The Galaxy S24 FE supports access to the fast 5G mobile network. When it comes to using the device in German-speaking regions, the Samsung smartphone also has no 4G connectivity problems. However, the LTE band coverage is somewhat more limited than that of the Galaxy S24.
The high-end phone might not offer WiFi 7 in a home Wi-Fi network, but thanks to its 6 GHz support, it still managed to achieve high transfer speeds of more than 1,800 MBit/s with our reference router, the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000.
The positioning is impressive compared to our comparison device (Garmin Venu 2), however, we recorded some small but noticeably inaccurate measurements. With the Galaxy S24 FE, we only measured small deviations from the travelled route, thanks in part to dual-band GNSS.
Telephone functions and voice quality - The Galaxy phone has dual-SIM
The Galaxy S24 FE's voice quality turns out to be very good. Voices are reproduced clearly, and ambient noise is noticeably filtered out. The Samsung phone supports common functions such as VoLTE or Wi-Fi calls, as well as Galaxy AI. If desired, the latter can translate calls via the Samsung telephone app in real-time and without a data connection. As well as two eSIMs, you can also use two physical cards for dual-SIM functionality. A combination of both worlds is, of course, also possible.
Cameras - A Samsung smartphone with teleoptics
As well as being lower resolution than the S24 sister model, the Galaxy S24 FE's front camera only has one fixed focus. However, on the rear, there is the same optically stabilized, 50 MPix resolution main camera found in the S24 series. In daylight, the ISOCELL GN3 used here delivers beautiful photos with a good dynamic range. The 1/1.56-inch camera sensor only begins to produce a pronounced soft focus the darker it gets. The Galaxy S24 FE is also impressive when it comes to color reproduction.
The main camera is complemented by a 12 MPix ultra wide-angle lens which, however, uses a smaller 1/3.2-inch sensor than the one found in the Galaxy S24. Despite this, the quality is decent providing you have good lighting conditions. The difference is also relatively small when taking zoom shots. The Galaxy S24 FE captures slightly lower resolution 8 MPix images but the Fan Edition offers a lossless 3x zoom with a similarly sized sensor as the Galaxy S24. A maximum of 30x digital zoom is also available. At up to 10x zoom, the Galaxy S24 FE's photos are absolutely acceptable.

Wide angleWide-angleLow lightUltra-wide-angleZoom 5xAccessories and warranty - The Samsung phone comes without a charger
You won't find a charger or a case in the box. Only a data or charging cable (USB-C to USB-C) and a SIM too are included. However, Samsung offers a large selection of optional protective cases.
In Germany, Samsung provides its FE model with a 24-month warranty. You can also take out a Care+ insurance package for up to two years for your Galaxy phone. Prices sit at around $69 and $179, depending on the chosen package.
Input devices & operation - The Galaxy S24 FE has Face Unlock
The Galaxy S24 FE's capacitive touchscreen responds without any lag, and animations are very smooth thanks to the 120 Hz panel. The linear electric motor responsible for vibrations (x-axis) provides crisp, haptic feedback.
Biometric security is done via the front camera in 2D or an optical fingerprint sensor integrated into the OLED panel. In everyday situations, both options work very reliably, although the Face Unlock function is quite insecure.
Display - The Galaxy S24 FE uses a dynamic AMOLED 2X
The Galaxy S24 FE's 1080p AMOLED panel possesses a screen diagonal of 6.7 inches and an optional refresh rate of either 60 Hz or 120 Hz. Playing HDR content, we reached a peak brightness of (2,168 cd/m²), and we were also impressed by a similarly high brightness of 1,984 cd/m² in the real-life APL18 test.
Unfortunately, Samsung hasn't provided its Fan Edition with eye-friendly PWM dimming. Due to its built-in OLED technology, the Galaxy S24 FE uses low-frequency PWM to control the screen brightness. We measured a low but consistent 240 Hz with an oscilloscope.

A series of masurements with a fixed zoom level and different brightness settings (the amplitude curve at minimum brightness looks flat, but this is due to the scaling. The enlarged version of the amplitude at minimum brightness can be seen in the info box.)
Our analysis with the photo spectrometer and the Calman software shows the AMOLED panel to have very low average Delta-E deviations for the controlled sRGB color space. In addition to two color profiles, the white balance can also be individually adjusted in the settings menus.

The Galaxy S24 FE made a very good impression outdoors. The Samsung possesses sufficient brightness reserves to get to grips with autumnal light situations. But, even in summer, reflections on the glass surface shouldn't be annoying thanks to the high brightness. The OLED screen also enjoys good viewing angle stability.
Performance - Galaxy phone has an in-house SoC
Samsung has equipped the Galaxy S24 FE with an Exynos 2400e, which is clocked slightly lower than the Exynos 2400. However, that only affects the Cortex X4 performance core, which is only clocked at 3.1 GHz in the FE model instead of a maximum of 3.2 GHz. Despite this, the difference won't ever be noticeable in everyday tasks. Similar to the Galaxy S24, the Fan Edition uses 8 GB of RAM. In the benchmarks, the Exynos 2400e demonstrated itself to be very performant and, as expected, there are no noticeable differences compared to the Exynos 2400.

We took a closer look at the built-in Xclipse 940 iGPU relating to high-framerate gaming using the GameBench application. Games with low system requirements, such as the first-person shooter Dead Trigger 2, can be played on the Galaxy S24 FE in medium settings at 120 fps. Demanding games such as PUBG mobile can only be played in the lowest graphics settings at a high 90 fps. The Galaxy phone can play our third game, Genshin Impact, in the highest graphics settings at 60 fps.

Speakers
In our test, the pleasant-sounding stereo speakers demonstrated linear mids and a hint of bass. The highs were also present in the sound stage, but visibly broke down in our pink noise measurement. Alternatively, headphones can be connected via the USB port or wirelessly via Bluetooth. There is a solid range of audio codecs to choose from.

Battery runtimes - The Galaxy S24 FE charges wirelessly
Power consumption
Fast charging is not one of Samsung's flagship strengths, and this is also the case with the FE model. The Galaxy phone only offers a maximum of 25 watts when using a wired connection, but the 4,700 mAh battery can also be charged wirelessly. In our test, we achieved a charging time of around 80 minutes using the Xiaomi Powerbank 25000.
Seen from our measurements, the Galaxy S24 FE isn't particularly highly efficient, especially when running idle, but the power consumption is, overall, rather unremarkable.

Notebookcheck overall rating
With its late release and a high RRP, Samsung is making life difficult for its Fan Edition. However, as the fourth model to launch in the Galaxy S series, the FE model certainly has a right to exist.
