Natuurlijk, 999 euro is veel geld, maar vergeleken met de toptoestellen van andere merken zoals Apple en Samsung kost dit model haast net zoveel als het instapmodel. Hier zit ook nog eens 16 GB RAM en 256 GB geheugen bij. Er is echter ook een exemplaar met 16 GB RAM en 512 GB. Hiervoor betaal je 1.149 euro. OnePlus heeft echter ook nog een goedkopere optie met de 13R. Deze kost 749 euro, maar heeft van alles net wat minder. Zo zit er de langzamere Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in en heeft het een mindere camera. Ben je echter niet zo’n fotograaf en hoef je niet de allersnelste chip, dan kan je het zeker overwegen.

Onderaan de streep doet de OnePlus 13 weinig fout. De dingen die we tijdens ons gebruik zijn tegengekomen, vinden we in elk geval geen dealbreakers. We weten dat OxygenOS al lang geen OxygenOS meer is en steeds meer richting Oppo's ColorOS kruipt. Daarnaast zijn de camerakwaliteiten nooit de reden geweest om voor OnePlus te kiezen. Dat betekent niet dat je geen mooie shots maakt met dit toestel, maar met andere premium smartphones heb je wellicht een betere ervaring. Het enige dat in de weg zit, is die minimale prijs van 999 euro. Ook hier plaatsen we de kanttekening dat OnePlus op dit vlak veranderd is. Het merk is allang geen prijsvechter meer. Inmiddels is het basismodel vergelijkbaar geprijsd met concurrerende smartphones, waardoor er in feite een goede reden wegvalt om voor dit toestel te kiezen.

Er is op fotografiegebied enorm veel plezier te halen uit deze telefoon en de software die je foto’s een heel professionele look kunnen geven, maar tegelijkertijd lijkt macro en de twee keer zoom iets waar OnePlus nog aandacht aan mag besteden, net als aan zijn eigenheid. Dit zijn echter kleine smetjes op een telefoon die verder enorm snel is, lekker in de hand ligt en met een batterij en oplaadsnelheid komt waarvan we hopen dat die voor andere vlaggenschepen die dit jaar uitkomen (of deze maand nog…) als voorbeeld zal gelden.

Zo goed dat het gros van de foto’s en video’s op GadgetGear afgelopen jaar al afkomstig waren van de OnePlus Open en OnePlus 12. Dit jaar zal de 13 hun plek innemen, want de camera’s zijn zoveel beter geworden. Met name de nieuwe AI functies laten zien dat het ook voor de traditionele camera-industrie lastiger wordt om nog te concurreren voor het schieten van een gewoon goed plaatje. Bloedsnel is het toestel en de AI functies werken best aardig. Ik geef toe dat AI ook nu vooral nog als een gimmick aanvoelt in mijn dagelijkse praktijk, maar ik zie wel dat OxygenOS steeds handiger wordt in het aanbieden van AI ondersteuning op de juiste plekken. In OxygenOS 14 was het soms net even wat te veel zoekwerk om AI functies te vinden en te gebruiken. Met andere woorden, enorm veel verbeteringen. OnePlus legt aan het begin van het jaar de lat superhoog. Voor iedereen.

I could drone on about other bits and pieces on the OnePlus 13 for hours more but I feel that I would lose your interest as this has been quite long enough already (kudos for making it this far). However, I am not going to drag this out any more than is needed. Simply put although this is one of the 1st major brand launches of the year with the new Snapdragon Chipset onboard it is in my opinion one of the best phones currently available to the wider global market. I would be very happy to continue to use this phone daily and if I wasn’t so hooked on foldable phones I would certainly being doing so. While I fully expect the next phone series from Samsung to be up with the OnePlus 13 in terms of specs I also expect it to be way more expensive.

When it comes to OnePlus R devices, the main appeal lies in their exceptional bang for the buck, and the OnePlus 13R more than delivers. At $300 less than the regular OnePlus 13, the R version manages to retain the core experience remarkably well. It features an almost identical display, the same battery, and while its chipset is a year older, it’s still a highly capable performer. Naturally, some compromises were necessary to achieve the lower price point. In addition to lacking the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, the OnePlus 13R also omits wireless charging, and its camera system—particularly the ultrawide sensor—is less advanced than the flagship model. However, if you can live with these trade-offs, the OnePlus 13R is an outstanding value proposition.

It would take a really good camera system to knock the Pixel 9 Pro off the top spot as my first choice camera phone, and the OnePlus 13 comes agonizingly close, with all three of its cameras offering great images – although a few white balance mistakes and a shorter telephoto just take it away from perfection. Photos are detailed, with great results from each of the three different cameras. The colors are accurate and nicely saturated. The white balance, on the whole, is accurate, although it can veer slightly warmer, however, consistency has been a minor issue with some quirks in white balance and processing as you switch between cameras.And when it comes to hardware, I wish OnePlus had chosen to go further than a 3x optical zoom camera, I am a big zoom fan, and this doesn’t quite do it for me – I would really hope for at least a 5x optical zoom.

It’s big, powerful, and ready to keep you productive, thanks to its built-in S Pen. That same stylus means that Samsung’s top-end traditional flagship won’t work with any magnetic case, so you’ll have to make do with more traditional charging options. More importantly, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is one flagship that can give OnePlus’s improved camera zoom a run for its money thanks to 100x Space Zoom from its dual-telephoto setup. Just remember that we expect the next Galaxy S25 Ultra to be right around the corner and offer upgraded specs similar to the OnePlus 13.

In the end, the OnePlus 13 is a solid phone. It’s really powerful, can go for ages on a full charge, refills quickly, has a brilliant display and versatile camera system. It’s all the things you’d want a OnePlus phone to be. Does it move the needle much beyond what the OnePlus 12 offers? In some ways – specifically around performance and battery life. But, there’s an argument to be made here that not many people will feel the benefit of that extra power, because you need to push it really hard to make the most of all that extra ‘oomph’. Still, if you want a fast, long-lasting, versatile flagship phone alternative to Google and Samsung’s, it’s a great choice. I’d still be tempted to pick up the Oppo Find X8 Pro, for a little more refinement in design instead or the Vivo X200 Pro for the epic zoom camera.

Je leest het al in deze review: het is een toestel waarvan ik denk: ”t kan vriezen, ’t kan dooien’. Het enthousiasme dat ik voel bij de OnePlus 13, dat is minder bij haar kleine broer. Dat heeft vooral te maken met de fotografie: die is beduidend minder. Tegelijkertijd heeft OnePlus 13R ook veel om van te houden: een lange accuduur waar we al jaren om vragen bij menig fabrikant, een geweldig scherm, een prima (maar niet heel spannend) design en een besturingssysteem dat prettig werkt. Wat dat betreft is het een heel prettig toestel, maar voor die prijs boven de 700 euro mag het wat mij betreft wel ietsje meer zijn, zeker als het om fotografie gaat.

En dan is het de vraag, koop je voor de nieuwprijs nu de OnePlus 13R of is het stiekem toch niet interessanter om de OnePlus 12 in huis te halen… Voor wie echt graag met foto en video bezig is, heeft de Hasselblad camera van de 12 echt wel veel meer te bieden en draadloos opladen is natuurlijk ook wel hele mooi meegenomen. De gamer komt met de 13R echter beter uit omdat het toestel nog beter ontwikkeld is om op te spelen. Daarnaast krijg je natuurlijk een heel veel grotere batterij. We zien op dit moment dat het prijsverschil tussen de 12 en de 13R niet heel groot is.

OnePlus:

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

Qualcomm Adreno 830: Geïntegreerde grafische eenheid in de Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC voor smartphones met drie schijfjes van elk 1,1 GHz. Geïntegreerde 12 MB gedeelde cache voor de drie schijfjes. Volgens Qualcomm 40% sneller dan de vorige generatie (Adreno 750).

Qualcomm Adreno 750:

Grafische chip voor smartphones en tablets die is geïntegreerd in de Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. Qualcomm claimt dat hij 25% sneller is dan de Adreno 7340 in de Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 en uit eerste benchmarks blijkt dat de GPU de Apple A17 Pro iGPU kan verslaan.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8:

SD 8 Elite: High-end SoC (System on a Chip) voor smartphones die eind 2024 werd gepresenteerd. Het bevat twee snelle Oryon Gen 2 Prime Cores tot 4,32 GHz en 6 kleinere Oryon Gen 2 Performance Cores tot 3,53 GHz.

SD 8 Gen 3: High-end SoC voor smartphones die eind 2022 werd geïntroduceerd met een snelle primaire kern gebaseerd op een ARM Cortex-X3-architectuur geklokt op maximaal 3,2 GHz. Twee andere prestatiegerichte kernen zijn gebaseerd op de A715 en ondersteunen ook alleen 64-bits toepassingen. De twee extra A710-kernen ondersteunen ook 32 bit-toepassingen, net als de energiebesparende Cortex-A510-kernen. Naast de processorkernen bevat de SoC een WiFi 7 modem, een Hexagon DSP (voor AI-versnelling) en een Spectra ISP. De geïntegreerde geheugencontroller ondersteunt snel LPDDR5x-geheugen tot 4.200 MHz. 5G is opgenomen in de chip met de Snapdragon X70 modem.
