Toch kunnen we deze 749 euro kostende telefoon lastig aanraden. Concurrerende toestellen bieden meer functies én krijgen langer software-updates. De OnePlus 13R lijkt ons daarom een interessante koop als hij in prijs gaat zakken. Voor nu zijn de Google Pixel 9, Motorola Edge 50 Neo en Samsung Galaxy S24 boeiender alternatieven.

Je leest het al in deze review: het is een toestel waarvan ik denk: ”t kan vriezen, ’t kan dooien’. Het enthousiasme dat ik voel bij de OnePlus 13, dat is minder bij haar kleine broer. Dat heeft vooral te maken met de fotografie: die is beduidend minder. Tegelijkertijd heeft OnePlus 13R ook veel om van te houden: een lange accuduur waar we al jaren om vragen bij menig fabrikant, een geweldig scherm, een prima (maar niet heel spannend) design en een besturingssysteem dat prettig werkt. Wat dat betreft is het een heel prettig toestel, maar voor die prijs boven de 700 euro mag het wat mij betreft wel ietsje meer zijn, zeker als het om fotografie gaat.

En dan is het de vraag, koop je voor de nieuwprijs nu de OnePlus 13R of is het stiekem toch niet interessanter om de OnePlus 12 in huis te halen… Voor wie echt graag met foto en video bezig is, heeft de Hasselblad camera van de 12 echt wel veel meer te bieden en draadloos opladen is natuurlijk ook wel hele mooi meegenomen. De gamer komt met de 13R echter beter uit omdat het toestel nog beter ontwikkeld is om op te spelen. Daarnaast krijg je natuurlijk een heel veel grotere batterij. We zien op dit moment dat het prijsverschil tussen de 12 en de 13R niet heel groot is.

Ok, so let’s conclude the OnePlus 13R review, and let’s imagine for a minute, that we are in a parallel universe, and I am the head of product for OnePlus. My ideal OnePlus 13R would look something like this. I wouldn’t have changed the design from last year. The display improvement is excellent, OnePlus has done great work with performance & software experience and the battery life is also top-notch. And I am somewhat fine with the IP64 rating, and speaker quality too. First, I would have included the OnePlus 13’s vibration motor for a more refined typing experience. Second, I would have optimized the main camera by either including Hasselblad optimization like we get the OP13 or including a better bigger sensor.

Overall, this phone feels like a miss compared to other options that are available. The price increase in particular doesn’t feel warranted considering the lackluster performance in the camera department. If you just want a powerful phone with fast charging, then this is a great phone to pick up, but if you want a complete package, you’ll be better served with the Pixel 8a. The Samsung Galaxy S24 FE is also not a bad option, but it’s a little more expensive, which may be off putting. If this phone existed in a vacuum, maybe an argument could be made that saving $300 over the OnePlus 13 might be a good value, but the OnePlus 13 is so much better than this phone, that it’s worth the extra scratch. It’s too bad OnePlus isn’t working with US carriers anymore. This phone would be a great “free with two-year contract” option or something in that vein. As it is, you have to buy it outright, and that makes it a harder sell.

That, along with some additional improvements to photo processing, creates a camera phone that's better able to compete with the Pixel 8a. The OnePlus 13R is a great choice if you're looking for a phone that gives every impression of being high-end but that doesn't break the bank. Of course, with a mid-range price, there are bound to be a few trade-offs, but the 13R does a good job of giving you a complete experience without emptying your wallet. The 13R has a surprisingly premium build, and it just feels solid and comfortable when you hold it. Going almost edge to edge, the large flat display is stunning to look at as well, incredibly sharp with great color, I just found it a joy to use. The phone is lightning-fast, and OxygenOS is one of my favorite non-Pixel takes on Android. Battery life is another win, and gave me a full day of juice before I needed to plug it in.The downside – the 13R’s cameras are just pretty meh.

The slower charge speeds are annoying, as is the continued lack of wireless charging, but they’re minor inconveniences rather than serious drawbacks. My conclusion for the OnePlus 13R is similar to mine for the OnePlus 12R.

There's the newly launched Oppo Reno 13 Pro (Review), which costs higher but lacks in key areas such as performance and battery life. There's also the Xiaomi 14 (Review), which gets the same chipset, offers better cameras, a compact design, and also costs about a little higher. You can also go for the iQOO 12 (Review), which, although older, still offers great performance and a decent camera setup.

The 13R easily covers all bases without necessarily breaking the bank too. Having said that, the ultrawide and selfie cameras keep us from giving the 13R an excellent score in this department and alternatives seem to be better at taking stills and videos. Also, even if the maximum brightness is sufficient, most other displays in this price bracket are brighter.

The OnePlus 13R doesn’t hide its flaws, making it easy to understand just where your money goes. Like its predecessor, display and battery prowess are among the phone’s best qualities, but it also happens to be one of the better Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-powered phones on the market right now – especially at its price point. While I favour the design, the user experience is superb. It’s a shame both the protective glass and fast charging got downgraded from the OnePlus 12R, but in all other areas, this phone punches up. If you want better water resistance and wireless charging, all of the alternatives mentioned in the pricing section will fit the bill, but there’s nothing that quite strikes the same balance as the OnePlus 13R, making it the perfect fit for those who still haven’t quite found what they’re looking for.

The OnePlus 13R might not have the latest mobile platform under its hood, but it’s still an exceptionally capable device that offers heaps of power, superb battery life and very fast charging. There’s a brilliant display too, an improved design and software experience, and you’ll get solid results from the main camera as well, making this phone a great all-rounder. I’d like the Alert Slider to do more, the OS update commitment needs to be longer, and not all the camera sensors are as strong as the main sensor, but they are minor qualms overall.

Qualcomm Adreno 750:

Grafische chip voor smartphones en tablets die is geïntegreerd in de Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. Qualcomm claimt dat hij 25% sneller is dan de Adreno 7340 in de Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 en uit eerste benchmarks blijkt dat de GPU de Apple A17 Pro iGPU kan verslaan.

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

SD 8 Gen 3: High-end SoC voor smartphones die eind 2022 werd geïntroduceerd met een snelle primaire kern gebaseerd op een ARM Cortex-X3-architectuur geklokt op maximaal 3,2 GHz. Twee andere prestatiegerichte kernen zijn gebaseerd op de A715 en ondersteunen ook alleen 64-bits toepassingen. De twee extra A710-kernen ondersteunen ook 32 bit-toepassingen, net als de energiebesparende Cortex-A510-kernen. Naast de processorkernen bevat de SoC een WiFi 7 modem, een Hexagon DSP (voor AI-versnelling) en een Spectra ISP. De geïntegreerde geheugencontroller ondersteunt snel LPDDR5x-geheugen tot 4.200 MHz. 5G is opgenomen in de chip met de Snapdragon X70 modem.
