De bekende mini PC fabrikant Minisforum heeft de Minisforum MS-01 die nu wordt uitgebreid met een ander model in de vorm van de MS-A1. Dit is niet zomaar een upgrade, want Minisforum pakt het helemaal anders aan met de mogelijkheid om de CPU te vervangen. Een AM5-socket dient als basis, en deze kan worden uitgerust met verschillende AMD Ryzen CPU's. De Minisforum MS-A1 kan in de winkel van het bedrijf zelf als barebone besteld worden, maar ook met de AMD Ryzen 7 8700G al voorgeïnstalleerd. Deze laatste bevat ook 32 GB DDR5 RAM, een 1 TB SSD en een Windows 11 Pro licentie. Voor 829 euro is de voorgeconfigureerde Minisforum MS-A1 mini PC zeker geen koopje. Het barebone model is al verkrijgbaar voor 289 euro en zou daarom een uitstekend alternatief kunnen zijn als u bereid bent om de overige componenten zelf aan te schaffen.

Behuizing - Combinatie van metaal en kunststof

Op het eerste gezicht lijkt Minisforum voor de MS-A1 dezelfde behuizing te hebben gebruikt als voor het MS-01 model. Dit is echter niet het geval. Er zijn zeker enkele visuele aspecten die beide modellen gemeen hebben. De constructie van de Minisforum MS-A1 is echter compleet anders. De gebruikte materialen zijn nog steeds metaal en plastic, hoewel de plastic onderdelen alleen aan de voorkant te vinden zijn. In het interne duel is de Minisforum MS-A1 iets korter. Toch heeft de Mini-PC iets meer ruimte nodig dan de extreem kleine apparaten van Geekom. De rivalen van HP en Lenovo, die ook zijn uitgerust met verwisselbare CPU's, zijn bijna even groot.

Er is nauwelijks iets aan te merken op de bouwkwaliteit van de Minisforum MS-A1. De oppervlakken bieden een goede haptiek. Het apparaat is ook zeer stabiel en torsiestijf dankzij de materiaalkeuze. Het enige punt van kritiek van onze kant is de afwerking van het oppervlak, waardoor vingerafdrukken erg snel zichtbaar worden. Vergeleken met de andere mini-pc's is de Minisforum MS-A1 een van de zwaardere apparaten in deze vergelijking, met een gewicht van 1,7 kilogram. Aangezien dit geen mobiel apparaat is, kan dit punt enigszins genegeerd worden. De 240-watt voeding weegt nog eens 762 gram en weegt ook meer dan de meeste concurrenten.

Uitrusting

De Minisforum MS-A1 heeft geen bovengemiddeld aantal aansluitingen. Desondanks is de selectie indrukwekkend: naast vijf USB Type-A-aansluitingen heeft Minisforum ook een USB-C-poort met 40 GBit/s en een OCuLink-interface geïnstalleerd, die we gebruikten in combinatie met de Minisforum DEG1 OCulink eGPU Dock en een Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 afzonderlijk. Om schermen aan te sluiten, wordt de Minisforum MS-A1 geleverd met één HDMI en één DisplayPort. De USB 4 interface kan ook voor dit doel worden gebruikt. Dit betekent dat de mini-pc in totaal drie schermen tegelijk kan bedienen.

Communicatie

De fabrikant heeft een Intel Wi-Fi module in de MS-A1 ingebouwd. De Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX210 draadloze module maakt ook het gebruik van de modernere en merkbaar snellere 6 GHz frequentieband mogelijk. In de test met de Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 levert de Wi-Fi module hoge en stabiele gegevenssnelheden. Als alleen het 5 GHz frequentiebereik beschikbaar is, dalen de datasnelheden voor verzenden en ontvangen aanzienlijk. Desondanks is dit voldoende voor de Minisforum MS-A1 om zich in het middenveld te positioneren in vergelijking met de apparaten waarmee wordt vergeleken. Er bevinden zich twee RJ45-aansluitingen op de achterkant van de MS-A1. Beide aansluitingen zijn bedoeld voor transmissies tot 2,5 GBit/s. Beide poorten kunnen ook worden gebundeld, waardoor 5 Gbit/s mogelijk wordt.

Accessoires

De leveringsomvang van de Minisforum MS-A1 is niet erg uitgebreid. Naast de minipc zelf worden ook de relatief grote 240-watt voeding en een HDMI-kabel meegeleverd. Een adapter voor het installeren van een U.2 SSD wordt ook meegeleverd.

Onderhoud

Onderhoudswerkzaamheden zijn over het algemeen mogelijk op het Minisforum MS-A1. Het openen van de Minisforum MS-A1 is echter veel gecompliceerder dan bij de Minisforum MS-01. Er moeten in totaal acht schroeven worden losgedraaid om de behuizing te openen. Bovendien zijn er grote koellichamen geïnstalleerd, die eerst verwijderd moeten worden als u RAM en SSD's wilt installeren. Aangezien de Minisforum MS-A1 ook verkrijgbaar is als barebone-optie, hadden we liever een eenvoudigere oplossing gezien zoals de Minisforum MS-01. De CPU, het RAM en de SSD's kunnen echter met een beetje moeite eenvoudig worden geïnstalleerd.

Duurzaamheid

De Minisforum MS-A1 wordt geleverd in een vrij compacte kartonnen doos. De accessoires zijn verpakt in aparte plastic hoesjes, wat volgens ons qua duurzaamheid voor verbetering vatbaar is. We willen graag de nadruk leggen op het modulaire ontwerp, waardoor kleine reparaties mogelijk zijn. De MS-A1 van Minisforum komt echter niet in de buurt van het modulaire ontwerp van de HP Z2 Mini G9 of de Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny. Daarnaast is er geen verdere informatie die wijst op duurzaamheid wat betreft de productie en de gebruikte materialen.

Prestaties - AMD Ryzen 7 8700G met 8 kernen en snelle iGPU

De Minisforum MS-A1 kan gekocht worden als barebone of in de versie die wij getest hebben met een vooraf geïnstalleerde AMD Ryzen 7 8700G. Samen met 32 GB RAM en een SSD van 1 TB is het model voorlopig goed uitgerust. De processor biedt ook een snelle iGPU, die anders alleen in mobiele SoC's wordt gebruikt. Als u het zonder 3D-prestaties kunt stellen, kunt u de Minisforum MS-A1 ook uitrusten met andere AM5-gebaseerde processors. Dit betekent dat de kleine mini-pc zelfs gecombineerd kan worden met zijn 16-core processor.

Voor enkele prestatietests hebben we de AMD Ryzen 7 8700G vergeleken met de AMD Ryzen 9 7950X. In tegenstelling tot wat de fabrikant beweert, kan de TDP na het vervangen van de processor slechts op 75 watt worden ingesteld in de UEFI. Het doel is eigenlijk 100 watt voor processors met twee CCD's. Desondanks hebben we enkele vergelijkende tests uitgevoerd in deze configuratie en de resultaten opgenomen in de vergelijkende grafieken. We hebben hierover contact opgenomen met de fabrikant. Na overleg met Minisforum zal er in de komende modellen een verbeterde koeleenheid voor de spanningsomvormers worden ingebouwd. Tegelijkertijd zal er een nieuwe BIOS-versie worden uitgebracht, die dan ook de Ryzen 9000-serie processors zal ondersteunen.

Testomstandigheden

Voor alle prestatietests met de Minisforum MS-A1 gebruiken we het energieprofiel "maximale prestatie". Er waren alleen afwijkingen hiervan in het stroomverbruik en de geluidsmetingen volgens onze Testcriteria.

De UEFI van het Minisforum MS-A1

Het UEFI van de Minisforum MS-A1 ziet er modern en netjes uit. Enkele essentiële wijzigingen zoals het aanpassen van de TDP van de processor en de maximale CPU-temperatuur zijn handig. Het bruikbare RAM-geheugen voor de iGPU kan ook worden aangepast. Voor alle volgende tests hebben we hier echter geen wijzigingen aangebracht en het apparaat in de leveringstoestand gelaten. Helaas zijn er geen uitgebreidere opties, zoals het uitschakelen van individuele poorten.

Processor

De processor in de Minisforum MS-A1 is een AMD Ryzen 7 8700G. Als voorgeconfigureerde versie van de mini-pc installeert Minisforum alleen dit model. Andere AM5-processors kunnen ook worden geïnstalleerd. Het BIOS moet echter soms worden bijgewerkt als er ook modellen uit de 9000-serie worden geïnstalleerd. Daarbij is de omweg via een AMD Ryzen 7000 of een AMD Ryzen 8600G of 8700G onvermijdelijk, omdat de Minisforum MS-A1 geen flashback-optie biedt waarmee het BIOS zonder RAM en CPU geïnstalleerd kan worden. Een ander belangrijk gegeven om te weten is dat er een TDP-limiet is van 100 watt. Dit betekent onder andere dat een AMD Ryzen 9 7950X alleen kan werken met aanzienlijk verminderde prestaties.

Maar nu de prestaties van de AMD Ryzen 7 8700G in het Minisforum MS-A1. De processor is in wezen een mobiele SoC en is gebaseerd op de Zen4-architectuur. De chip is ook uitgerust met de krachtige AMD Radeon 780M, waardoor de AMD Ryzen 7 8700G de desktopprocessor met de krachtigste iGPU is. Hierover later meer. In een directe vergelijking staat de Minisforum MS-A1 op een goede derde plaats. De HP Z2 Mini G9 en ook de Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny met hun snellere Intel-processors kunnen zich enigszins onderscheiden. Hier worden ook conventionele desktop processoren gebruikt, die qua prestaties duidelijk superieur zijn aan hun mobiele tegenhangers. De resultaten laten zien dat de AMD Ryzen 7 8700G op hetzelfde prestatieniveau zit als de AMD Ryzen 9 8945H van de Geekom AX8 Pro.

Zoals reeds vermeld, hebben we de Minisforum MS-A1 ook vergeleken met de AMD Ryzen 9 7950X. Vergeleken met de AMD Ryzen 7 8700G levert de 16-core gemiddeld ongeveer 12 procent meer prestaties. Als u puur naar de multi-core tests kijkt, zijn prestatieverhogingen van 50 procent en meer mogelijk.

Massa-opslag

SSD-verbindingen met de Minisforum MS-A1 (Bron: Minisforum)

Het Minisforum MS-A1 kan worden uitgerust met in totaal vier SSD's. Alle M.2-poorten zijn PCIe-aansluitingen, die kunnen worden uitgerust met NVMe SSD's met een lengte van 80 millimeter. Met de meegeleverde adapter kunnen ook 2,5-inch SSD's die gebruik maken van de SFF U.2 interface worden geïnstalleerd. De waarschuwing moet in acht worden genomen om schade aan een M.2 SSD te voorkomen als er geen 2.5-inch SSD wordt geïnstalleerd.

Ons testexemplaar bevat een 1 TB SSD van Kingston, die uitstekend presteert in vergelijking met zijn concurrenten. Alleen de Samsung PM9A1a in de Lenovo ThinkStation Tiny P3 presteert over het algemeen iets beter. De M.2 interface levert in het beste geval PCIe 4.0 x4 snelheid, die de geïnstalleerde SSD ook optimaal benut. Dit resulteert in goede overdrachtsnelheden die zelfs onder belasting niet afnemen. Minisforum heeft hiervoor een royale koeleenheid voorzien.

Grafische kaart

Met de AMD Radeon 780Mde AMD Ryzen 7 8700G een krachtige iGPU, die momenteel de snelste geïntegreerde grafische eenheid onder desktopprocessoren is. Dit model is al in veel mobiele processors ingebouwd. In de prestatievergelijking kunnen we zien dat de prestaties zijn mobiele tegenhangers kunnen bijhouden. De Minisforum MS-A1 levert bijna dezelfde 3D-prestaties als de Geekom AX8 Pro. Vergeleken met de Nvidia T1000die wordt gebruikt in de Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tinykan de iGPU in ons testvoorbeeld ook hier bijblijven. Verschillen zijn alleen te zien in de rendertests, die aanzienlijk beter draaien op de professionele grafische adapters.

Ook hier bekijken we de prestaties op basis van de AMD Ryzen 9 7950X in meer detail. Door de aanzienlijk zwakkere iGPU van de 16-core zijn de 3D-prestaties merkbaar zwakker. Als gevolg hiervan valt de Minisforum MS-01 terug naar de laatste plaats en is alleen nog in een duel met de HP Elite Mini 800 G9.

Gamingprestaties

De prestaties van de AMD Radeon 780M die we in de synthetische benchmarks hebben gedocumenteerd, zijn ook duidelijk in de gamingtests. De Minisforum MS-A1 wint het interne duel duidelijk dankzij de krachtigere iGPU. De twee vergelijkingsapparaten met een dedicated grafische kaart bieden merkbaar meer prestaties. De AMD Radeon 780M levert een enorme prestatieverbetering in vergelijking met de andere iGPU's die in desktop processors zijn ingebouwd. Toch bereikt de iGPU al snel zijn limiet met moderne games. Oudere titels kunnen soms echter vloeiend worden afgespeeld, zelfs met hoge details.

Minisforum MS-A1 en Minisforum DEG1 eGPU Dock met de Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090

Uitgerust met een OCuLink-interface kan de Minisforum MS-A1 worden aangesloten op externe grafische kaarten om de 3D-prestaties enorm te verhogen. U moet echter wel een bandbreedtebeperking accepteren, aangezien de externe grafische kaart via OCuLink op zijn best met PCIe 4.0 x4 snelheid werkt. Dit is nog altijd beter dan een USB 4-aansluiting, die alleen met PCIe 3.0 x4 werkt. Samen met het Minisforum DEG1 eGPU dock en een Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090hebben we enkele tests uitgevoerd om de prestatieverhoging te illustreren die verwacht kan worden van de snelste grafische kaarten voor consumenten die momenteel verkrijgbaar zijn.

De prestatievergelijking in de synthetische tests laat zien dat de combinatie met de externe grafische kaart zeker het potentieel heeft om conventionele desktopsystemen bij te houden. We willen echter niet alles verdoezelen, want het verschil in prestaties is aanzienlijk groter als we naar de gamingtests kijken. Afhankelijk van het spel en de toepassing varieert het prestatietekort door de lagere bandbreedte via de OCuLink interface. Vergeleken met de volledige PCIe 4.0 x16 interface verliest de Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 ongeveer 30 procent aan prestaties. Dit betekent dat het team nog steeds uitstekende algemene prestaties levert, wat betekent dat de meeste games goed gespeeld kunnen worden in 2.160p op volledige details.

Uitstoot - Goede koeling en een te grote voedingseenheid

Geluidsemissies

De koeleenheid, die bovenop de processor zit, bestaat uit een heatpipe-constructie, die gekoeld wordt met behulp van twee ventilatoren. Dit werkt in de praktijk vrij goed, hoewel het apparaat altijd zachtjes hoorbaar is. Er zit ook nog een ventilator aan de onderkant, die de SSD-koeler van verse lucht voorziet. Bij stationair draaien registreerden we een geluidsdrukniveau van 34 dB(A), wat consequent luider is dan bij de concurrentie. Onder belasting stijgt het geluidsniveau tot 46,2 dB(A). Het geluid van de ventilator is in ieder geval niet hoogfrequent, wat de werking onder volledige belasting iets draaglijker maakt. Bij gemiddelde belasting daalt het geluidsniveau iets en komt uit op 41 dB(A). Een uitstekend resultaat als u kijkt naar de concurrenten onder dezelfde belasting. De HP Elite Mini 800 G9, die zeer stil is bij een gemiddelde belasting van slechts 30,2 dB(A), presteert uitstekend.

Temperatuur

De behuizing van de Minisforum MS-A1 blijft altijd erg koel. Zelfs onder belasting bereikten we geen 40 °C, wat uitstekend is. Zoals we al in de stresstests hebben gezien, kan de AMD Ryzen 7 8700G stabiele prestaties leveren. De temperatuurlimiet is in het BIOS ingesteld op 90 °C. We bereiken deze waarde op geen enkel moment in onze tests, wat de stabiele prestaties onder continue belasting ondersteunt. We zien een maximum van 83 °C in de stresstest met Prime95. Daarnaast werkt de processor constant op 65 watt, wat overeenkomt met wat Minisforum de AMD Ryzen 7 8700G geeft.

Stroomverbruik

Tegenover het Minisforum MS-01is de Minisforum MS-A1 aanzienlijk zuiniger. Dit is al duidelijk in de ruststand, waar ons testexemplaar het doet met 8,8 tot 14 watt. Bij gemiddelde belasting klimt de energiebehoefte naar iets meer dan 90 watt, wat veel hoger is dan bij de meeste andere mini-pc's. Door de energievretende processors in de HP Z2 Mini G9 en de Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tinyzullen we hier geen directe vergelijking maken. Bovendien zijn beide apparaten uitgerust met speciale grafische kaarten, die het benodigde vermogen onder belasting aanzienlijk verhogen. De Minisforum MS-A1 haalt slechts een piek van 102,1 watt, wat ons verbaast als we naar de voedingseenheid kijken. De fabrikant levert een 240-watt voeding bij de Minisforum MS-A1, die bij lange na niet aan zijn limieten voldoet. Zelfs met een krachtigere AMD Ryzen 9 7950Xkomt u niet eens in de buurt van een overbelasting van de voeding, want volgens de specificaties van de fabrikant is het stroomverbruik van de processors met twee CCD's beperkt tot 100 watt.

Minisforum MS-A1 in review - beschikbaar gesteld door Minisforum

De Minisforum MS-A1 is niet zomaar een warme rehash van de Minisforum MS-01 met het AMD-platform. Dit wordt al snel duidelijk als u ziet dat de fabrikant de MS-A1 ook als barebone zonder CPU aanbiedt. De mogelijkheid om de keuze van de CPU aan de gebruiker over te laten is zeker het grootste voordeel van de Minisforum MS-A1. AMD onthulde bij de lancering al dat AM5-processors nog enkele jaren ondersteund zouden worden. Het valt echter nog te bezien hoe goed Minisforum dit in de toekomst zal implementeren. Er is immers een nieuw BIOS nodig om toekomstige processors te kunnen ondersteunen.

De Minisforum MS-A1 is een uitstekende basis voor een krachtig werkstation. De Miniforum MS-A1 is in deze vorm geen puur werkstation.

Als u de Minisforum MS-A1 in de voorgeconfigureerde versie wilt gebruiken met de AMD Ryzen 7 8700G krijgt u een uitstekende basis met de optie om later te upgraden. Met 8 cores en 16 threads levert de APU voldoende prestaties om de meeste taken aan te kunnen. Er is ook 32 GB DDR5 RAM en een SSD van 1 TB, waardoor het apparaat meteen klaar is voor gebruik. De Minisforum MS-A1 biedt een goede selectie externe interfaces. Zowel USB4 als OCuLink zijn beschikbaar en breiden de mogelijkheden enorm uit. Deze laatste kan perfect gecombineerd worden met het Minisforum DEG1 eGPU dock.

De Minisforum MS-A1 een werkstation noemen is een gewaagde uitspraak, want in de kern verschilt de mini-PC niet van een compacte PC, zoals de HP Elite Mini 800 G9bijvoorbeeld. Het is mogelijk om van de Minisforum MS-A1 een werkstation te maken met de juiste accessoires. Dit vereist echter een extra investering. Een combinatie met een professionele grafische oplossing uit de fabriek zou effectiever zijn, hoewel dit aanzienlijk duurder is. Over de prijs gesproken - daar hebben we tot nu toe nauwelijks iets over gezegd: er staat 829 euro op de rekening als het om het apparaat in onze testconfiguratie moet gaan. Daarmee zit Minisforum op hetzelfde niveau als HP met zijn Elite Mini-800 G9 modellen. Als u zelf wilt zorgen voor de CPU, het RAM-geheugen, de SSD en het besturingssysteem, kunt u de Minisforum MS-A1 al voor 289 euro krijgen.

Samenvattend kunnen we zeggen dat Minisforum met de MS-A1 een zeer interessant apparaat op de markt heeft gebracht. De mogelijkheid om de CPU later te vervangen is een stap in de goede richting. De connectiviteit, met name de OCuLink-aansluiting, is iets wat je niet ziet bij bekende merken als HP, Lenovo, Dell of Asus.

De Minisforum MS-A1 is direct verkrijgbaar in de winkel bij Minisforum. Het apparaat is momenteel in onze testconfiguratie verkrijgbaar voor 829 euro. In de VS kan de barebone-versie ook worden gekocht bij Amazon voor $260.
