I think the Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2-in-1 checks all of the right boxes. Google's Chrome browser is there for most of the work, and there are Android apps for the rest. It's a pretty nice hybrid solution, although as I noted above, it does need some work.

The Dell isn't as quick in everyday tasks but is a far better gaming system, its battery life is a fraction longer and the screen resolution is higher. But the MateBook is 300g lighter, more enjoyable to use thanks to its screen and keyboard quality, and enjoys the faster CPU. It's close, but the D 16 remains our top budget choice.

The fact that all that ability is wrapped up in a smart aluminium body with a great keyboard and ample opportunities to upgrade post-purchase are just the cherries on the cake. For $1,050, you’ll want to love the laptop you buy. We can really only recommend the Inspiron 14 7420 2-in-1 to those who will frequently take advantage of its 180-degree flexibility and the touchscreen. As a laptop alone, it’s a bit disappointing for the price. If you’re primarily looking for a tablet with an attached keyboard that you don’t have to remember to charge, this could be the device for you, especially if you find it on sale. If you think you’ll only occasionally use your device’s touchscreen, you might like to save a couple of hundred dollars with the MSI Summit 13 Evo Flip, which also boasts 180-degree flexibility, stylus compatibility, and an Intel i7 processor. You could even enjoy a Microsoft Surface Pro 9, which offers similar specs at about the same price (or cheaper) and can be used with a detachable Bluetooth keyboard. If you’re not insistent on having a touchscreen, you can find a much better laptop in Apple’s 2020 MacBook Air M1, which we’ve boldly (but confidently) referred to as “the best laptop you can buy.” If you’re not into the Apple ecosystem, the older Acer Swift X packs a lot of speed into a comfortable body with 9+ hour battery life (and you even get an Nvidia RTX 3050 Ti). Meanwhile, the Dell XPS 13 9315 can hit double the Inspiron 14’s battery life for $1,099. At the time of publication, the Inspiron 14 7420 is on sale for $750 via Dell’s website. At that price, it’s easier to recommend; otherwise, we’d suggest looking into a few other options before making your final decision.

While a redeeming factor can be found in the reasonable $700 price tag, I would much rather opt for a laptop with better performance specs in lieu of the clunky 2-in-1 capabilities offered by the Dell Inspiron 14. As a master of none, the Inspiron 14 fails to satisfy any area of productivity, gaming, or media enjoyment. If the 2-in-1 functionality is non-negotiable, and you can find it on sale, the Inspiron 14 may be a worthwhile purchase. Otherwise, I would recommend steering clear and spending your money elsewhere. Dell's Inspiron 14 2-in-1 tries to do too many things at once. In its efforts, it falls short of establishing itself as a satisfactory productivity machine, gaming laptop, or 2-in-1 tablet. It has a few redeeming qualities, like a springy keyboard and a sleek design, but they can't save the Inspiron 14 from being spread too thin.

Frankly, we considered giving the Inspiron 14 2-in-1 three-and-a-half stars for its low price, competitive performance, and long battery life. Unfortunately, working with a screen that can't deliver at least 300 nits of brightness is simply no fun to the point of detrimental. Still, if you're looking for a convertible laptop on a tight budget, it's worth keeping an eye on Dell's sales and discounts. That Lavender Blue model is fairly tempting.

And even at its entry-level price, it’s beaten soundly by the Asus ZenBook 14 OLED which starts out just slightly more expensive with a gorgeous OLED display. It’s an odd coincidence that the last laptop I reviewed, the Lenovo Flex 5i 14, was almost identical in its overall value and received a very similar review. Sure, you’ll get competent productivity performance from the Inspiron 14 2-in-1 and great battery life. Those are major plusses in its favor. But the overall construction and poor display hold it back from a recommendation.

Dell: Dell is een Amerikaanse fabrikant (gevestigd in Texas) van computerhardware, opgericht in 1984 en is een van de grootste internationale fabrikanten, zowel qua marktaandeel als qua notebookmodellen. De productlijn omvat desktops, notebooks, opslagsystemen, monitors, servers, printers, consumentenelektronica en randapparatuur. Dell biedt laptops die geschikt zijn voor verschillende toepassingen, zoals zakelijke laptops, gaming laptops, ultra portables en werkstations. De zakelijke laptops uit de Latitude en Precision series van Dell zijn een optie voor professionele gebruikers en bedrijven.

In 2023 had Dell een marktaandeel van ongeveer 17% in de wereldwijde verkoop van pc's en stond daarmee op de derde plaats, na Lenovo en HP.

Voor gameliefhebbers is er Dell's Alienware merk voor gaming notebooks.
