De Xiaomi 12T Pro kost op het moment van schrijven zo'n 750 euro. Daarmee valt de telefoon in de 'net onder de echte high-end-categorie'. Deze categorie is in trek, maar wel een lastige. Wat je namelijk ziet is dat nieuwe toestellen in deze categorie op een aantal vlakken natuurlijk moeten bezuinigen ten opzichte van de 'echte' high-end smartphones boven de 800 á 850 euro. Hierdoor zijn de smartphones uit de 'net onder de echte high-end-categorie' het al gauw net niet. Ze zijn namelijk niet 'echt' high-end én niet voordelig genoeg voor een echte 'prijs-kwaliteitknaller'. Daarbij komen in deze prijscategorie ook veel oude vlaggenschepen van fabrikanten terecht die soms concurreren met hun eigen nieuwe 750-euro kostende model. Interessant om dit in de gaten te houden. Los hiervan zou Xiaomi dus nog veel meer uit de 12T Pro kunnen halen en ervoor kunnen zorgen dat het toestel één van de beste keuzes rond de 750 euro wordt. De telefoon heeft de hardware in ieder geval in handen, nu de software nog. Voor nu moet het toestel echter nog concurrenten als de Samsung Galaxy S22, de OnePlus 10 Pro, de Google Pixel 6 Pro en de ASUS Zenfone 9 voor zich dulden.

The Xiaomi 12T Pro has a lot going for it, for the price, with a flagship-level processor, ultra-fast charging, and a great looking screen. Unfortunately, in the camera department, it feels as if Xiaomi spent the majority of their money on the 200MP camera, and then had to cut back on the other cameras, with an 8MP ultra-wide camera, and the almost entirely forgettable 2MP macro camera. The 200MP sensor seems to serve very little purpose, other than being a marketing tool. You can shoot 50MP or 200MP images if you want, but as this is only available in a specific UltraHD or Pro mode then you are forced to shoot at 12.5MP in the vast majority of shooting modes. It will be interesting to see how the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, with a 200MP main camera performs in comparison, although it’s worth noting that this is roughly twice the price of the 12T Pro.

It is very natural to compare the Xiaomi 12T Pro with the OnePlus 10T. Both mobiles can be said to be downgraded upgrades compared to the respective top models, both come with the fastest Qualcomm processor, Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, and the two mobiles cost roughly the same. With the Xiaomi 12T Pro you get a better camera, IP53 certification and a higher resolution screen, while the OnePlus 10T actually comes with even faster charging, namely 150 watts, than the Xiaomi 12T Pro. Amazing, but true. On the other hand, it is crazy that the Xiaomi 12T Pro will cost substantially more than the 11T Pro did a year ago. In some respects, the 12T Pro is actually worse than its direct predecessor – such as the brightness of the screen, the size of the camera’s telephoto lens, and the choice of Gorilla Glass 5 for screen protection, where the 11T Pro came with Gorilla Glass Victus – so if you already own than Xiaomi 11T Pro you’ d better keep it.

All in, Xiaomi 12T Pro satisfies what it’s designed to offer. You can’t really go wrong with this phone choice if your core focus is on a fluid display, good battery uptime, and a powerful processor in your phone. It's true that there are cheaper, more polished alternatives to choose from, but the Xiaomi 12T Pro is functional in those areas too. It's a good overall package that also convinced us to give our Best Value accolade. If you want to spend as little as possible and still get a phone with an SD8+G1 processor and all the ‘core’ flagship perks, the Xiaomi 12T Pro is quite literally it (at least in Singapore). In our initial launch coverage, you'll also note that Xiaomi still offers a non-Pro Xiaomi 12T at somewhat similar pricing to the Xiaomi 11T Pro, but you don't get the top-tier treatment like its choice of camera sensors, less memory and trading Snapdragon for a Mediatek processor.

Xiaomi’s website says the 12T Pro’s display can reach a maximum 900 nits, but we measured brightness going up to 970 nits in sunlight. Overall, the Premium-segmented 12T Pro, which is equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ (Gen1) processor, did not outperform the 12T, which is fitted with MediaTek’s Dimensity 8100 Ultra chipset. But if you look closer, the pricing splits the difference between the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. I would argue that for a little bit more the Pixel 7 Pro offers a better display, better software smarts, and a better overall camera experience. And if you want to save a bit of money then definitely don’t overlook the base Pixel 7 if it is available in your country. Alternatively, the Xiaomi 12 Pro from earlier in the year might be available on sale for a comparable price. That device offers a better display, better audio, and a better overall camera experience. So it is going to be up to you to decide if the 12T Pro is worth your hard-earned money.

While Xiaomi has impressed with its image processing algorithms in the past, and its rapid charging abilities give an edge over Samsung and Apple, we’ll need to properly test the battery and take a lot more photos before we can give a final verdict. The glass/plastic construction and somewhat tepid secondary cameras might also make you pause before opening your wallet. Based on first impressions, though, performance and display image quality are easily worth the price of admission.

What’s more, the price seems eminently reasonable for a phone with such specs. However, there are still a few potential drawbacks; for one thing, the secondary cameras could potentially be a step-down from the main shooter, though we’ve not yet had enough time to establish that as a fact just yet. Additionally, the design does feel noticeably less premium than that of its older brother, the Xiaomi 12 Pro. However, for the time being we’re feeling rather optimistic about the potential of this new premium smartphone.

While the battery life is not standard-setting, it’s solid, and the charging speed is excellent. It’s just a shame the 12T isn’t actually an upgrade from the old Xiaomi 11T in all respects. Aspects of the 12T’s build are worse, and the macro camera is much worse. You might want to see if you can get that older model for cheap before it disappears entirely. However, I find the 12T easier to recommend than the pricier 12T Pro, as the latter’s upgraded 200-megapixel camera isn’t actually much better than the former’s 108-megapixel one. And while the 12T Pro has a punchier processor, it can overheat when under strain for longer periods, which I haven’t seen happening with the 12T.

Xiaomi:

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

Qualcomm Adreno 730:

Grafische chip voor smartphones en tablets die geïntegreerd is in de Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. Qualcomm claimt dat deze 30% sneller is dan de Adreno 660 in de Snapdragon 888 SoC. Voor Android zou het eind 2021 een van de snelste grafische kaarten moeten zijn.

De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).

GPU uit het middensegment met 6 kernen en gebaseerd op de tweede generatie van de Valhall-architectuur.

Qualcomm Snapdragon:

SD 8+ Gen 1:

High-end SoC voor smartphones die eind 2021 werd geïntroduceerd en geproduceerd werd in 4 nm bij TSMC. Integreert één "Prime Core" op basis van een ARM Cortex-X2-architectuur geklokt op maximaal 3,2 GHz. Drie andere prestatiekernen zijn gebaseerd op de A710 maar klokken tot 2,5 GHz. Verder zijn er vier energiebesparende kernen geïntegreerd die zijn gebaseerd op de ARM Cortex-A510 architectuur en klokken tot 1,8 GHz. Naast de processorkernen integreert de SoC een WiFi 6e modem, een Hexagon DSP (voor AI-versnelling) en een Spectra ISP. De geïntegreerde geheugencontroller ondersteunt snel LPDDR5-geheugen met maximaal 3.200 MHz. 5G is nu opgenomen in de chip met de Snapdragon X65-modem. Vergeleken met de niet-plus versie biedt de 8+ Gen 1 een 200 MHz hoger geklokte Prime Core en een 10% hoger geklokte GPU. Bovendien wordt hij nu geproduceerd bij TSMC en niet meer bij Samsung.

Dimensity 8100:

De Dimensity 8100 is een mid-range processor met een geïntegreerde 5G-modem. De processor heeft vier snelle ARM Cortex-A78 kernen tot 2,85 GHz en vier efficiënte Cortex-A55 kernen tot 2 GHz.
