Met krachtige prestaties, een goede accuduur en over het algemeen prima camera’s doet de vouwbare smartphone het goed. Ook is het fijn dat de Z Fold 6 maar liefst zeven jaar aan Android-versies en beveiligingsupdates krijgt. Wel heeft de foldable her en der wat tekortkomingen. Het buitenste scherm voelt in onze beleving nog net iets te smal aan om er comfortabel op te appen en te scrollen. Ook werd de smartphone een keer echt te heet tijdens het installeren van game-content. Ook de hoge adviesprijs zorgt voor een dilemma. Met de plus- en minpunten die we hebben vinden we het lastig om te zeggen of het prijskaartje verantwoord is. Want een goede camera-opstelling, batterijduur en krachtige prestaties zijn niet exclusief voor een vouwbare smartphone.

Should you buy the Galaxy Fold 6? I don’t have a clear answer. In my opinion, the Fold 6 is the best smartphone with a flexible display. I note the significant improvement in display brightness, enhanced performance, a more pleasant and simpler design, and a thinner build. However, most importantly, it has increased water and dust resistance with an IP48 rating. Samsung surprised us by promising 7 years of system updates and enhanced the already complex One UI with additional AI features, some of which are very useful. On the other hand, it’s evident that Samsung has simply skipped some enhancements between generations. The cameras remain the same (except for the ultra-wide).

Even today, you can snag free doubled storage and up to $1200 in trade-in savings. Not bad. As for a verdict, if a foldable phone is what you desire, then this would be a great choice. Samsung is six years deep into foldables, while competition like Google and OnePlus are still relative newcomers. This phone has amazing hardware with a great in-hand feel, good cameras, gorgeous displays, and 98% of the specs you’d want. I still would’ve liked to see 16GB RAM. Oh well.

So that’s all for my full review of the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6. And if I had to summarize everything I feel about this phone in two words, I’d say it’s “tastefully boring”. Like… I see its appeal and I would never take it away from anyone, but I would also never stand in line for it. The Fold 6 is a perfectly fine foldable, a perfectly sophisticated and well-engineered machine that’s unfortunately just not that memorable. There’s so much Samsung could’ve done, there’s so much the competition has shown what’s capable of this form factor. But it’s a little sad to see how Samsung is still playing it safe and relying on its brand power more than anything. And at this point, I’m just waiting for Samsung to go all out on its foldable phones I guess.

But it's no longer top dog, with the OnePlus Open, Vivo X3 Fold Pro and other big rivals. Not to mention Google's incoming Pixel 9 Pro Fold! Camera fans will find the Galaxy Z Fold 6 doesn't have Samsung's best optics slapped on, despite that high asking price. It can't compare to the S24 Ultra for night shots and video, although for most other situations this foldable is worthy. Battery life is another area where the Samsung Z Fold 6 doesn't hold up to rivals, and recharging is sadly slow as well.

Again, foldables such as the Galaxy Z Fold6 is still somewhat of a niche product and only those who find the appeal and afford the luxury of owning one will find the novelty a worthwhile investment.

The materials needed to make the screen fold are still too soft for anything less than careful use and repairs are very expensive if the worst does happen.

Samsung pioneered the foldable phone, but now it’s stubbornly iterating on that original concept — and it feels like the time for iteration is over. The company seems committed to its current long and narrow template rather than adopting a wider format. Personally, I think the OnePlus Open is the ideal foldable design, and it’s about halfway between the tall and skinny Z Fold 6 and the wide and short Google Pixel Fold.

I love using it for work, taking notes, and multi-tasking as Samsung excels in those departments. However, I don't want to reward Samsung for twiddling its thumbs for the last three years, simply because no one else can compete with it. The camera department hasn't evolved in two years. Performance still lags behind other, less expensive high-end smartphones. The same goes for the charging speed. As for the design, frankly, it hasn't evolved enough in my opinion. I tear my hair out when I see some reviews devote three paragraphs to the fact that the Z Fold 6 is 14 grams lighter. Isn't that insane? Yes, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is the best foldable smartphone on the market, there is no question about it.

There are a couple of things I'm going to save for the full review, such as the camera along with diving deeper into performance and battery life. With performance, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy performs just as well as you'd suspect. The Fold 6 is fast and snappy, as I have yet to run into any game-breaking slow-downs, save for when I'm trying to emulate Switch games. But again, more on that in the full review. Although I talked about a lot here, there's still so much more that I want to cover, such as Samsung DeX, the cameras, and gaming. Even still, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 has managed to surprise and impress, despite me having basically written it off before Samsung announced it. At face value, even with all the upgrades, I can’t say whether the Z Fold 6 is worth the price increase, but I’m interested in finding out. The Z Flip 6 also increased to $1,462.99 from $1,299. Again, I can’t say if this price increase is worth it without putting the handset through its paces, but considering it mostly received quality-of-life updates, I doubt it. I love foldable smartphones, so I will spend a lot of time with both handsets, especially the Z Fold 6. I’m curious to see whether the wider screen is enough to make it stand out against the OnePlus Open. I would also like to see if the Z Flip 6 can compete against the Moto Razr+.

Qualcomm Adreno 750:

Grafische chip voor smartphones en tablets die is geïntegreerd in de Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. Qualcomm claimt dat hij 25% sneller is dan de Adreno 7340 in de Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 en uit eerste benchmarks blijkt dat de GPU de Apple A17 Pro iGPU kan verslaan.

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

SD 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy: High-end SoC voor smartphones die eind 2022 werd geïntroduceerd. De cryo-CPU is gebaseerd op ARM's v9.2-architectuur en bestaat uit drie clusters: De eerste bevat een snelle prime core(ARM Cortex-X4) met maximaal 3,39 GHz. De tweede bestaat uit drie power-kernen met maximaal 3,2 GHz en twee extra kernen die klokken op maximaal 3,0 GHz (allemaal Cortex-A720). De efficiëntiecluster bestaat uit twee energiebesparende kernen(Cortex-A520) die werken op maximaal 2,3 GHz. De SoC gebruikt de geïntegreerde Adreno 750 voor grafische versnelling. 5G is opgenomen in de chip met de Snapdragon X70 modem. Vergeleken met de normale SD8 Gen3 biedt de "voor Galaxy" variant een 90 MHz hoger geklokte prime core en een hoger geklokte GPU.
