Het compacte formaat wanneer je hem dichtklapt speelt daarin een grote rol, maar ook het feit dat je toegang hebt tot een volwaardige smartphone met een 6,7 inch scherm is erg belangrijk. Je hoeft dus nergens echt op in te leveren in de dagelijkse ervaring: je hebt je grote oled-scherm, maar niet zo’n blok in je broekzak.

Ik vind hem alleen te duur. Voor de prijs van €1500 is deze telefoon van jou, terwijl de compleet opgevoerde Galaxy S20 Ultra een startprijs van €1350 kent.

Het feit dat je de Flip kunt opvouwen is tegelijkertijd de kracht en de zwakte van de smartphone. Het design is erg leuk, het toestel ziet er mooi uit. Het open en dichtklappen van het toestel voelt lekker en eenmaal dichtgeklapt is het toestel prima te vervoeren in je broekzak. Het uiterlijk is dan ook eigenlijk het meest interessante aan het toestel. De specificaties en dan vooral de camera zijn niet super. De Z Flip heeft de hardware van een vlaggenschiptoestel van vorig jaar, met het uiterlijk van weleer. De vraagprijs van 1500 euro is simpelweg niet voor iedereen te verantwoorden. Aan de ene kant is het tof dat Samsung buiten de geijkte paden durft te treden met dit toestel, aan de andere kant is dit een smartphone die niet voor Jan en alleman is weggelegd.

Despite some of the concerns, if you've always wanted to go retro with clamshell-style phones, be the first mover in embracing cutting-edge technology and look cool while doing so, there's little else to keep you from making the jump - just like I did.

Sure, the Galaxy Z Flip has its shortcomings, be that in its lack of an IP rating, the camera setup, or the cover display, but what phone doesn’t? The important thing to recognize here is what it represents. It’s flipping the script on what a modern smartphone should be. It shows us that foldable phones aren’t too out there, that they’re more than a proof of concept. What Samsung has achieved with the Galaxy Z Flip is going to shift the entire industry and it leaves us very excited for the future. $1,380 is a lot of money, but if you’re okay with spending it, spend it on the Galaxy Z Flip.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip launched to much fanfare in February 2020. Dubbed as the third "mass-market" foldable smartphone, this folding phone flipped (quite literally) the display into a clamshell design reminiscent of retro flip phones as well as the newly updated Motorola RAZR foldable. Unlike the Moto, however, Samsung packed some seriously good specs into this handset. You get a 1080p equivalent ultra-wide 21.9:9 1080p-equivalent display, a Snapdragon 855+, 8GB, 256GB+ storage, and all a camera assembly similar to that found in the Galaxy S10. Sure, there have been early reports of durability issues from fellow YouTubers like JerryRigEverything, but we believe they're largely blown out of proportion and whilst Samsung should be chastised for misleading advertising, the glass display is *actually* glass and is *actually* really great. The question, however, remains: "Is this phone worth $1,400?" and "Can the Galaxy Z Flip with 2019 specs really hold a candle to Samsung's 2020 flagship Galaxy S20 line?" In a way, yes. In other ways, no. One thing is to be sure: this thing is made of glass, it folds, and it's actually really great.
