Bovendien ben je vast klaar voor de toekomst dankzij 5G-ondersteuning. Desondanks mag je voor deze prijs meer verwachten op softwaregebied. De hoeveelheid onnodige apps en diensten is gewoonweg te hoog en ook mag je voor een Apple-achtige prijs ook Apple-achtige update-ondersteuning verwachten.

Als ik nu een lijstje zou maken met alle kenmerken waar mijn ideale smartphone aan moet voldoen, kan ik met de Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus nagenoeg alles afvinken. De indruk die de S20 Plus op mij achter heeft gelaten is dat het een echte alleskunner is. Dan heb ik het niet alleen over de rekenkracht van het toestel, maar ook de prachtige foto’s, het schitterende scherm met hoge vernieuwingsfrequentie en de handige functies en opties in de software.

Welke S20 voor jou geschikt is hangt natuurlijk af van je wensen en je budget. Allereerst is er voorlopig nog geen dekkend 5G netwerk. Je kan je afvragen of het de moeite waard is om hier 100 euro extra voor te betalen bij de reguliere S20. De verschillen tussen de S20 en de S20+ zijn dusdanig klein dat onze voorkeur tussen deze twee toestellen uitgaat naar de S20. Als je perse een groter scherm wilt dan is de S20+ natuurlijk de goede keuze. De S20 Ultra is van een totaal andere klasse. Je krijgt hier een bijna professionele camera, een joekel van een scherm en eventueel 512 MB opslag. Met een meerprijs van 400 tot 600 euro ten opzichte van de S20 is dit toestel ook wel heel fors geprijsd. Wij raden dit toestel alleen aan als je daadwerkelijk van plan bent alle mogelijkheden van de camera te benutten.

The display, features, battery life and performance are all top notch and, although the camera can’t quite beat the iPhone 11 Pro for all-round performance (or the pricier S20 Ultra), there isn’t a massive amount of difference. You’ll be happy with the results, either way. Ultimately, you’ll be choosing the Galaxy S20 Plus because you want the best an Android phone has to offer but can’t quite justify the £200 extra for the Ultra. The S20+ I feel is a proper successor to the S10+, and I’m even willing to switch over to it as a daily device. The 120Hz screen remains incredible no matter the battery life impact, and the cameras are still plenty good, even if not class-leading. The users in Snapdragon markets in particular end up with a device that makes very few compromises and is seemingly worthy of being a top class 2020 flagship. I just hope that Samsung will be able to resolve the camera discrepancies between the different models, as well as generally improve the camera picture quality over the coming months. If they achieve this, then I feel that the new phones would warrant their release price tags.

The S20 and S20+ are basically the same phone, aside from their differences in size, battery and mmWave support. The Plus also has an additional depth sensor on its back for slightly better portrait mode and AR effects. Are those features worth the extra $200 for the larger phone? Only if you really want a bigger screen, extra long battery and super fast 5G on T-Mobile. Verizon offers a mmWave-compatible S20, so your decision will also depend on what carrier you’re on. For most people, though the base S20 is plenty of phone. In the case of this year’s S20 trio, smaller is so much better. I felt like the Ultra was overkill when it came to size, camera features and most importantly, price. At $1,000, the S20 costs about the same as its competitors, though the S20+ still comes in at a premium.
