NVIDIA Quadro M500M
De Nvidia Quadro M500M is een DirectX 12 (FL 11_0) en OpenGL 4.5-compatibele grafische kaart voor laptop-workstations. De kaart is een Maxwell-gebaseerde GPU gebaseerd op de GM108-chip met 384 shader cores en gefabriceerd in 28 nm bij TSMC. De Quadro M500M is de opvolger van de Quadro K620M die ook gebaseerd is op de Maxwell GM108 maar een hogere geheugenbandbreedte heeft (16 vs. 14.4 GB/s). Daarom is hij vergelijkbaar met de GeForce 930M voor consumenten.
De Quadro-serie biedt gecertificeerde drivers die geoptimaliseerd zijn voor stabiliteit en prestaties in professionele applicaties als CAD of DCC. OpenGL-prestaties zouden bijvoorbeeld aanzienlijk beter moeten zijn in vergelijking met GeForce grafische kaarten met gelijkaardige specificaties.
In vergelijking met Kepler werd Maxwell geoptimaliseerd op verschillende vlakken om de energie-efficiëntie te verhogen. Kleinere Streaming Multiprocessors (SMM) met slechts 128 ALU's (Kepler: 192) en een geoptimaliseerde scheduler zouden tot een beter gebruik van de shaders moeten leiden. Nvidia belooft dat een Maxwell SMM met 128 ALU's 90% van de performance van een Kepler SMX met 192 ALU's kan bieden. GM107 beschikt over 5 SMM's en dus 640 shader cores, 40 TMU's en 16 ROP's (128-Bit-interface).
Een andere verbetering is de enorm vergrote L2-cache (GM107: 2 MB). De grotere capaciteit kan een deel van de datastroom opvangen wat een relatief smalle geheuginterface toelaat zonder significant aan prestaties in te boeten.
GM108 biedt ondersteuning voor DirectX 11.2 (alleen feature level 11.0) evenals DirectX 12.
De prestaties zouden iets slechter moeten zijn dan die van de Quadro K620M (zelfde chip, maar iets meer geheugenbandbreedte) waardoor de GPU een instapmodel dedicated grafische kaart is. Voor 3D-games zou de Quadro M500M ongeveer hetzelfde presteren als de GeForce 930M. Daarom zullen enkel weinig veeleisende games vloeiend speelbaar zijn.
De feature-set omvat ondersteuning voor maximaal vier actieve schermen. Monitors met hoge resoluties tot 3840 x 2160 pixels kunnen aangesloten worden via DisplayPort 1.2 of HDMI 1.4a (HDMI 2.0 niet ondersteund). HD-Audio codecs zoals Dolby TrueHD en DTS-HD kunnen doorgegeven worden via bitstream-modus door de HDMI-poort. Aangezien de meeste laptops echter over Optimus beschikken zal de geïntegreerde GPU waarschijnlijk rechtstreekse controle hebben over de schermpoorten waardoor de feature-set van de Nvidia Kepler-kaarten in de praktijk ingeperkt worden.
Gebruikmakend van CUDA of OpenCL kunnen de cores van de Quadro M1000M ook gebruikt worden voor algemene berekeningen.
GM108 integreert de zesde generatie van de PureVideo HD video-engine (VP6) die betere decoding-prestaties biedt voor H.264- en MPEG-2-video's. VP6 ondersteunt uiteraard alle features van vorige generaties (ondersteuning voor 4K, PIP, video-encoding via NVENC API).
Het stroomverbruik van de Quadro M500M (en M600M, K620M) is afgestemd op 30 Watt. Daarom is de GPU het best geschikt voor laptops van het 13/14-inch-formaat of groter. De M500M beschikt ook over Optimus om automatisch te switchen tussen een geïntegreerde grafische kaart en de Nvidia-GPU.
