Het was enorm gaaf om te zien hoe het toestel in de Sahara, bij 46 graden, gewoon lekker in 4K bleef filmen. Veel toestellen hebben de neiging om dan al snel oververhit te geraken. Ook was het display heel goed te gebruiken terwijl ze zon op haar hoogst stond. Met de combinatie van testen in een zilte zee lucht denk ik dat we het toestel aardig op de proef hebben kunnen stellen. De besparing op de chipset is iets waar we in de praktijk eigenlijk geen last van hebben gehad. Het toestel was en bleef gewoon bloedsnel. Eigenlijk precies wat je van de Motorola Razr 50 Ultra mag verwachten. Wel was de meegeleverde cover meer dan ruk. Die moet echt terug naar de ontwerptafel.

De Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is een fijne smartphone die op een aantal vlakken een topmodel is. Met uitstekende camera’s en krachtige prestatie heb je echt het gevoel een high end-smartphone in handen te hebben. Als kers op de taart kijkt het scherm fijn weg en gaat de batterij gemakkelijk 1,5 dag mee. Is de smartphone dan een perfecte high-ender? Nee. Het updatebeleid van drie nieuwe Android-versies en vier jaar aan beveiligingsupdates is in dit prijssegment karig. Ook is het zonde dat er extra apps op worden gezet die je waarschijnlijk niet gebruikt. Vind je het echter prima om de smartphone eerst schoon te vegen en weet je zeker dat je over vier jaar weer een nieuw toestel koopt, hoeft het geen dealbreaker te zijn.

Het is lang geleden dat we echt enthousiast zijn geworden van een nieuwe smartphone. Het is tegenwoordig toch allemaal vooral veel van hetzelfde. Toch is het de Motorola Edge 50 Ultra gelukt, ook al is het toestel niet perfect. Het unieke design met echt hout of veganistisch leer, het veelzijdige camerasysteem, vlotte hardware en razendsnel opladen, de prachtige beeld- en geluidskwaliteit en de overdaad aan werk- en opslaggeheugen (16 GB werkgeheugen en 1 TB opslaggeheugen, lezen jullie mee Apple, Samsung en Google?) zorgen voor een zeer goed toestel. Daar staat wel een updatebeleid tegenover dat beter moet. Drie grote Android-updates en vier jaar beveiligingsupdates is te karig voor een smartphone van 999 euro. Daarnaast zijn de camera’s nog wat inconsistent.

It's quite understandable why this happens, but as for me, this smartphone deserves more attention. Motorola has managed to make a rather nice device with a good set of characteristics, including a high-quality screen, a productive platform, wide camera capabilities, adequate battery life, and extremely fast charging. The model generally meets all the criteria of a good smartphone and offers a maximum of 16 GB/1 TB of storage. However, not everyone will like the design with a curved screen, as well as some uncertainty about the number of years Motorola will be ready to release operating system updates for this model.

There’s a lot to like about the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra, with it putting in an extremely strong performance for the price point. It compares well with the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, with the compromises generally coming from specifications that aren’t strictly directly related to the quality of the onboard camera, such as to the screen. The best results come from the 1x lens, but the others also put in a very good performance too, making this a great all-rounder. I’ve seen better macro options elsewhere, but the pictures are reasonable enough for ordinary usage, but portraits and low light are a bit more impressive. So, in answer to the question – is the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra as good as a Samsung flagship – well, it’s a definite maybe.

The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra isn't quite as Ultra as Samsung's equivalent phone, but it has a lot going for it. Great design, class-leading charging (with the charger included), plenty of power and performance at a price undercuts many rivals. It's a joy to use, but the creep of bloatware is real, so avoiding some of what Motorola might want you to install is worth doing. The 3x optical zoom puts in a good showing for itself, from a camera system that's generally very good. It's worth remembering that you also get access to some of that Google AI magic through Google Photos for those essential edits too, but some tweaks to the experience could make the camera better. Ultimately, Motorola is still offering something that feels like an alternative to a Google phone and there's enough in this package to make it a serious contender.

Thanks to a better autofocus and lower noise, it just beat out the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra in our ranking , but could not quite match the very best devices in the current crop of Ultra Premium smartphones. This said, the Edge 50 Ultra is noticeably improved over its predecessor Edge 40 Pro in many areas, including a better compromise between noise reduction and detail retention, as well as better image quality when zooming. A larger image sensor and wider aperture helped increase the light collection capacity, resulting in better low light performance.

Since I didn’t get a chance to review or experience any of the Moto Edge 40 smartphones last year, I thought I’ll see what the hype is about with the Moto Edge 50 Ultra.

That’s backed up by a 6.67-inch OLED screen with a 144Hz refresh rate that delivers smooth everyday performance, though the lack of LTPO tech present in practically all competitors at the £849 price point is a disappointment, especially when combined with the fact there’s no AOD functionality. Performance is pretty solid from the Snapdragon 8S Gen 3 chipset and a healthy 16GB RAM, handling both everyday tasks and gaming with ease, though the latter did make the smartphone uncomfortably warm after around 20 minutes of demanding gameplay.

At the end of the day, with the Edge 50 Ultra, Motorola has made a flagship that is cheaper than the competition and that offers good value for the money, but with some quirks you should know about. You get a triple camera system, you get the fast charging, you get more RAM and storage than you might ever need. You also get a phone with a stand-out and quite sleek design. To arrive at that lower price, Motorola has used a slightly less powerful chipset, but one that seems to be very power efficient. Unless you are a gamer who wants the best in performance, you probably should not be bothered by this. The camera system is also not quite the best one we have seen, and especially the ultra-wide camera and video quality take a hit.

The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is definitely looking good, especially with those different back panel materials it comes in and the thin formfactor. The curved display is not for everybody, though, but it also wouldn't be an proper "Edge" phone if it didn't include that. We are happy to see the importance Motorola has placed onto the camera system, which sounds like a potentially very capable one, especially if we were to speculate based on the Edge 50 Pro's camera performance. You also get quite the capable chipset inside, which is doesn't match the competition from Samsung exactly, but should offer more power-efficiency instead. The one issue—and it isn't a small one—that we have with the Edge 50 Ultra is that it only comes with 3 years of Android updates. Now, granted, if you don't plan on owning the phone for any longer than that, then maybe you wouldn't mind this setback.

As always, it's a bit early to tell whether the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is a good buy, but we can say it's definitely a promising one. It has all the bells and whistles of a true flagship phone while starting at €999, which is considered affordable in today's flagship segment. With time, the price will trend down, and the handset will become an even more enticing option. In any case, despite the promising hardware, a full review will reveal whether the 4,500 mAh battery will be enough for dependable endurance and it's going to be interesting to see how the new camera system will fare against the competition. The Moto Edge 50 Ultra is expected to come to market by the end of May and a lot could change in that timeframe.

Even after a short taster, it’s clear Motorola has picked a niche for the Edge 50 Ultra. It’s got plenty of high-end hardware, but not to the extent that other Ultra-badged phones do. At €999, it’s closer competition to the Google Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24+. Style-wise I think it comfortably competes, especially the Nordic Wood version, and it has them both beaten on charging speeds. Performance should be almost level, and the display is up to par too. Battery life is an unknown, and Motorola’s software additions aren’t quite as head-turning as Samsung’s Galaxy AI, though. Ultimately how well those rear cameras perform will dictate whether it can earn a place among flagship rivals.

Qualcomm Adreno 735: Grafische chip voor smartphones en tablets, geïntegreerd in de Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC.

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

SD 8s Gen 3: High-end SoC (System on a Chip) voor smartphones die in 2024 werd geïntroduceerd. Het bevat onder andere een snelle Cortex-X4 "Prime Core" tot 3 GHz en 4 extra snelle Cortex-A720 kernen van 2,8 GHz. Om stroom te besparen zijn er ook 3 extra ARM Cortex-A520 kernen met 2,3 GHz geïnstalleerd. Een 5G-modem, WiFi 7 en een aanzienlijk snellere AI-engine zijn geïntegreerd.

Grote schermformaten laten hogere resoluties toe. Details zoals letters zijn groter. Anderzijds is het energieverbruik lager bij kleine schermdiagonalen en de toestellen zijn kleiner, lichter en goedkoper.
