Jarenlang leek het erop dat ThinkPads uit de T-serie alleen maar minder modulair zouden worden. Daar komt nu een einde aan, de Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 keert terug naar een ontwerp met twee SO-DIMM-sleuven. Het is een geweldige kantoorlaptop, hoewel Meteor Lake U sneller zou kunnen zijn.

The battery life might be more forgivable if the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 aced all of the other crucial categories, but mushy left- and right-click buttons, a less-than-premium feeling chassis, and some general chunkiness make this laptop hard to justify when competitors are excelling in all of the above categories. This is still a solid business laptop that will get you by and if you’re a fan of the classic (albeit outdated) design of the ThinkPad, then this might be the pick for you. That being said, you should fully assess your options before smashing the “Add to cart” button like it’s the ThinkPad’s TrackPoint because competitors like Acer and Apple are offering a lot for a similar price point.

EN→NLI have to admit, I have some mixed feelings about the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5. I adore the concept of repairability. And from a value perspective, the fact that you can change out the RAM, hard drive, even the battery, with little more than a screwdriver and a guitar pic, is tantalizing. You should be able to make this laptop last longer, in theory, than a similarly spec’d thinner laptop. I laud those choices. However, at nearly $2,000 that value proposition isn’t as great as it could be. It’s expensive. And it’s not even as repairable as a Framework laptop, although it does come from a name you can be sure will be around in ten years. Meanwhile, some of the benchmark testing is hard to ignore. In my everyday usage, I didn’t notice that the laptop seemed any slower than others I’ve used in recent months.

Intel Graphics 4-Core iGPU (Arrow Lake): Geïntegreerde grafische kaart gebaseerd op de Xe LPG-architectuur (vergelijkbaar met de speciale Arc GPU's, maar met de nadruk op efficiëntie). Biedt 4 Xe-kernen (64 Xe vector-engines) en 4 ray-tracing-eenheden.
Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

Ultra 7 155U: Een middenklasse Meteor Lake-chip die in december 2023 zijn debuut maakte. Deze Core Ultra-processor van de 1e generatie vervangt de Core-processors van de 13e generatie; hij beschikt over 12 kernen (2 + 8 + 2) en 14 threads. De Performance cores, waarvan er 2 zijn, draaien op maximaal 4,8 GHz, terwijl de Efficient cores, waarvan er 10 zijn (8 hoofdkernen plus 2 extra in het Low Power Island) op maximaal 3,8 GHz draaien. De 4-core Intel Arc Graphics, die net uit de oven komt, dient als geïntegreerde grafische adapter - deze draait op maximaal 1,95 GHz - en er is ook een groot aantal andere gloednieuwe technologieën beschikbaar, waaronder de geïntegreerde AI Boost NPU met twee Gen 3 engines voor hardware AI-werklastversnelling. Het basisverbruik van deze laptopprocessor is 15 W, met 57 W als het door Intel aanbevolen maximale Turbo-verbruik.
