Met de ZS75 biedt MSI een erg dunne workstation met een 17-inch-scherm. Ondanks de dunne behuizing, die we reeds kennen van de GS75 gaming-laptop, beschikt het toestel ook over een splinternieuwe Quadro RTX-GPU van Nvidia. Is de WS75 een valabel alternatief voor de zwaargewichten van Dell, HP en Lenovo?

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde relatief trage responstijden in onze tests en is misschien te traag voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.1 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 73 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd slechter is dan het gemiddelde (20.9 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.165 (minimum) tot 636 (maximum) ms. » 56 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd slechter is dan het gemiddelde (32.8 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM niet waargenomen

Ter vergelijking: 53 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 8715 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz waargenomen.

De WS75 van MSI is een erg interessante workstation-laptop. De conversie van de GS75 gaming-laptop is prima geslaagd en het dunne toestel zal voor veel gebruikers een werkbaar alternatief zijn voor de bekende 17.3-inch-modellen, die er in vergelijking extreem log uitzien.

Een dergelijke reductie in formaat en gewicht gaat uiteraard gepaard met een aantal toegevingen in de bouwkwaliteit. De behuizing is wat eenvoudiger te buigen, en als je hem in de hand houdt, maakt de laptop soms lichte kraakgeluiden.

Het ontspiegelde 1080p-scherm blaast ons niet van onze sokken, maar doet wat het moet doen. De basis schermopties van de concurrentie zijn op dit vlak trouwens niet beter. Het optionele 4K-scherm zou de beeldkwaliteit wel verhoogd hebben.

Dan komen we nu aan het belangrijkste element: de prestaties van de WS75. Door zijn slanke dimensies waren we ietwat sceptisch over de keuze voor een gewone, (niet max-Q) versie van de Quadro RTX 4000. In onze testen was de GPU echter bijna steeds in staat om zijn maximale kloksnelheid aan te houden, inclusief turbo, wat resulteerde in uitmuntende grafische prestaties. De CPU liet evenmin te wensen over en kon in extreme scenario's zijn TDP van 45 Watt aanhouden. Temperatuur- en geluidsontwikkeling waren ook aanvaardbaar, iets dat zeker niet vanzelfsprekend is in het geval van dunne en lichte toestellen.

Compact, licht en stijlvol: de MSI WS75 maakt indruk met een erg elegant design, uitgebreide connectiviteit en een prima toetsenbord. Er zijn wat toegevingen gemaakt op het vlak stabiliteit, maar deze dunne workstation kan zich moeiteloos meten met de gevestigde zwaargewichten.

Er vallen zeker ook een aantal zwakke punten op te merken, waaronder de ondermaatse luidsprekers, het hoge energieverbruik onder belasting en de layout van de poorten. Toch is de WS75 een erg interessante optie voor gebruikers die op zoek zijn naar een toestel voor op het werk en thuis met zo hoog mogelijke prestaties in een zo compact mogelijke vormfactor
