Gebruikers kunnen een algemeen prestatieniveau verwachten dat heel dicht bij dat van de laatste generatie Skull Canyon NUC ligt terwijl ze stiller, koeler en voor een goedkopere startprijs werken. De toevoeging van Thunderbolt 3 betekent dat gebruikers het systeem kunnen koppelen met een extern grafisch dock voor gamen of andere veeleisende taken om de veelzijdigheid van het systeem verder uit te breiden.
De NUC8-serie zal opvallen door de CPU-opties van Coffee Lake-U en de resultaten zijn wat dit betreft meer gemengd. De Iris Plus Graphics 655 is 5 tot 30 procent sneller dan een AMD Vega 10, op voorwaarde dat je de NUC uitrust met dual-channel RAM, maar de CPU-prestaties zijn niet zo veel beter dan die van de goedkopere i7-8550U. De hogere TDP is voornamelijk bedoeld voor het aandrijven van de Iris GPU en dus profiteert de CPU weinig van het hogere TDP-limiet, behalve voor de eerste kortstondige piek van Turbo Boost-kloksnelheden.
Voor 4K streaming en HTPC-doeleinden zou een goedkopere ZBox of NUC7 mini-pc met de i5-8250U of i7-8550U voldoende zijn. De NUC8 is het beste voor diegene die de Thunderbolt 3-poort daadwerkelijk zullen gebruiken en de Iris Plus grafische kaart volledig benutten.
