Nadat AMD de lat hoger heeft gelegd met zijn nieuwe Ryzen-processors, kan Intel niet achterblijven. Helaas is dit niet meer dan een kleine upgrade ten opzichte van de Intel Core i9-9900K. We wachten nog altijd op een splinternieuwe architectuur, maar de sprong naar 10 nm wordt steeds verder uitgesteld. Anderzijds is Intel er met de Core i9-9900KS in geslaagd om de prestaties verder te verhogen, anderzijds is het energieverbruik ook verslechterd. De CPU heeft nog altijd 8 cores en 16 threads, ook loopt AMD met zijn maximum van 16 cores en 32 threads een stuk voorop op het vlak van multi-thread-prestaties. In werkelijkheid hebben games echter geen baat bij meer dan 8 cores, al kan dit in de toekomst wel veranderen.
Al bij al levert de Intel Core i9-9900KS uitstekende prestaties. De processor kan zowel games als applicaties moeiteloos aan. Voor gaming blijft het nog altijd de beste keuze. In vergelijking met AMD heeft Intel echter duidelijk grond verloren dit jaar. Om niet achter te blijven zou er volgend jaar een grotere prestatiesprong moeten komen, aangezien Zen 3 er volgend jaar ook zit aan te komen.
Een upgrade naar de Intel Core i9-9900KS is alleen de moeite waard als je er al de nodige ondersteuning voor hebt.
In een rechtstreekse vergelijking moet de CPU zich meten met de AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, die ook over 8 cores en 16 threads beschikt, maar 150 euro minder kost dan het topmodel van Intel. We kunnen alleen stellen dat de prijs/prestaties-verhouding niet ideaal is, en dat de Intel Core i9-9900KS minstens 100 euro te veel kost.
