De AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX is ongetwijfeld een krachtige APU. Het is momenteel de op één na snelste processor in AMD's portfolio achter de Threadripper 2990WX. Bovendien laat de Threadripper 2970WX de 2990WX verouderd lijken wanneer toepassingen kunnen profiteren van de 24 kernen en 48 threads. Uitstekende multi-core prestaties gaan ten koste van een hoger stroomverbruik, waardoor de Threadripper 2970WX niet kan worden gebruikt in een energiezuinig systeem.
Een groot voordeel van het Threadripper-assortiment is de compatibiliteit met eerdere versies. Tot nu toe ondersteunen alle X399-moederborden de nieuwe Threadripper APU's dankzij een BIOS-update. We raden u echter aan te onderzoeken of uw moederbordfabrikant vernieuwbare VRM-koellichamen verkoopt, omdat de Threadripper 2970WX en 2990WX een TDP van 250 Watt hebben. Hierdoor warmen VRM's aanzienlijk meer op dan wanneer ze worden gekoppeld aan een 180 Watt TDP APU.
De tweede generatie Threadripper APU's zijn de eerste processors die tot 32 kernen en 64 threads beschikbaar maken voor thuisgebruikers. De Threadripper 2970WX is een APU voor het werkstation die een geweldige aankoop zou zijn voor iemand die vaak gebruikmaakt van multi-core geoptimaliseerde applicaties. We raden u echter aan ergens anders naar op zoek te gaan als u op zoek bent naar een gaming-processor, omdat de single-core-prestaties het prijskaartje van bijna $1300 niet rechtvaardigen.
Het doel van de Threadripper 2970WX is voornamelijk als een APU voor een werkstation. De resultaten van de benchmark weerspiegelen deze intentie, waarbij de APU tot zijn recht komt in multi-core benchmarks. Bijna $1300 voor relatief slechte single-core prestaties lijkt misschien wat veel voor sommige mensen, maar de Threadripper 2970WX is aanzienlijk goedkoper dan zijn Intel-tegenhangers en biedt opvallend betere multi-core prestaties. Kortom, het stevige prijskaartje is naar onze mening gerechtvaardigd.
Video- of fotobewerkers zullen de kracht van de AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX waarderen. Op dezelfde manier kan de APU gemakkelijk meerdere virtuele machines tegelijk uitvoeren, waardoor de Threadripper 2970WX een geweldige kandidaat is als serverprocessor. Over het algemeen is de APU een multi-core beest, maar de teleurstellende single-core prestaties en de hoge instapprijs voorkomen dat het een perfecte CPU is. De chip wordt het best gebruikt in een werkstation of als serverprocessor, waar het gebruik kan maken van zijn hoge multi-core belasting.
