AMD heeft nu zijn nieuwe serie Threadripper APU's gelanceerd in navolging van de Zen+ update die de andere Ryzen APU's eerder dit voorjaar kregen. Alle vier nieuwe Threadripper APU's zijn gebaseerd op het 12nm FinFET fabricage proces en hebben een rits verbeteringen gekregen. AMD heeft niet alleen de kloksnelheden verhoogt maar ook het aantal cores; de 24- en 32-core WX-serie chips zijn echte werkstation APU's.
De nieuwe APU topper voor fanaten en gamers is de AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X, die de Threadripper 1950X APU opvolgt. De 2950X is een 16-core chip die simultaan 32 threads kan verwerken en een maximum TDP van 180 watt heeft. AMD heeft ook de kloksnelheden verhoogt en implementeert zowel XFR2 als PBO om beter de turbo kloksnelheden bij belasting te regelen. De 2950X past zijn kloksnelheid automatisch aan in stappen van 25 MHz voor een optimalere controle over de kloksnelheid.
Al met al is de 2950X een sterke kandidaat in zowel games als algemenere toepassingen. AMD heeft de 2950X aantrekkelijk geprijsd en biedt aanzienlijk meer prestaties dan de Intel Core i9-7900X voor hetzelfde geld.
De tweede generatie AMD Ryzen Threadripper APU's zijn aanzienlijk krachtiger dan de voorgangers. AMD heeft de eerste 32-core processors voor consumenten op de markt gezet, iets dat voorheen voorbehouden was aan servers. Deze nieuwe APU's, om specifiek te zijn de Threadripper 2950X, heeft een sterke prijs/prestatie-verhouding die Intel serieus onder druk zet.
AMD heeft een reputatie als het gaat om upgrade beleid. Als je al een X399 moederbord hebt dan kun je na een BIOS update upgraden naar de nieuwste generatie Threadripper APU's. Dit geldt zelfs voor de 250 watt WX-serie Threadripper APU's.
Diegenen die niet zonder de kracht van 16 cores willen of kunnen worden eindelijk op hun wenken bedient met de AMD Threadripper 2950X, met name door zijn prestaties in multithreaded toepassingen. Intel biedt momenteel geen vergelijkbare CPU die voor deze prijs hetzelfde niveau van prestaties haalt. De AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X krijgt dan ook duidelijk onze aanbeveling.
