Core 2 Extreme Notebook Processor (CPU)

De Intel Core 2 Extreme processor behoort, net als de Intel Core 2 Duo Processor tot de Intel Core familie en omvat de snelste modellen. De Intel Core 2 Extreme processoren zijn multi-core processors. Terwijl de meeste Core 2 Extreme processors dual-core processors zijn, is er één mobiele quad-core processor, de QX9300, beschikbaar sinds kwartaal drie 2008. Elke processor heeft een 64 bit processor. Afhankelijk van het model werken twee of vier 64-bit processors parallel samen in een Core 2 Extreme processor.

De mobiele Intel Core 2 Extreme processor serie is ontworpen voor extreem veeleisende gamers en voor HD multimedia voor onderweg. In principe is de Core 2 Extreme een verbeterde Core 2 Duo: de busverhouding sloten(overspeed beveiliging) is verwijderd. Dus kan de gebruiker de kloksnelheid perfect afstemmen aan zijn behoeften.

Kleine vermelding

Het is verstandig goed na te denken voordat je de processor overklokt. Intel biedt dan namelijk geen garanties meer op de systeem stabiliteit, datum behoudt en op de levensduur van de processor en andere systeem componenten.

De verschillende Intel Core 2 Extreme processors zijn geschikt voor verschillende platformen:

  • X9100: GL960, PM45
  • X9000: GL960, GM965, PM965
  • X7900, X7800: PM965

Prestaties

De prestaties van de Core 2 Extreme processoren zijn ongeveer vergelijkbaar met gelijkgeklokte Core 2 Duo processoren. Daarbij heeft de Penryn update de prestaties van de processoren verbeterd terwijl de TDP (thermal dissipation power) hetzelfde is gebleven. Penryn processors zijn geproduceerd met 45nm technologie (de vooranger van 65nm) en hebben een groter Level 2 Cache. Verder heeft de Penryn processor een snellere divisie eenheid en 47 nieuwe SSE instructies (SSE4 genaamd). Door het nieuwe productieproces kan Intel de klokverhouding verhogen, terwijl het energieverbruik gelijk blijft. We hebben helaas nog geen eigen prestatiebeoordelingen van de nieuwe quad-core processor, de QX9300. Vergeleken met het vorige topmodel in de Core 2 Extreme serie, de X9100, heeft hij vier in plaats van twee cores, 12 MB cache in plaats van 5 MB, maar een lage klokfrequentie van maar 2.53 GHz in plaats van 3.06 GHz. De front side bus werkt even snel in beide gevallen. Volgens Intel zijn de prestaties van de QX9300 tot 50% hoger bij het encoderen of  bij het bewerken van video's dan bij de X9100. De prestaties van het encoderen van video's werd gemeten met TMPGEncoder*, Xpress* 4.4 en het editen van video's met Adobe Premiere Pro* CS3. Details zijn te vinden op de website van Intel (Engels).

Tot nu toe zaten in sommige notebooks ook desktop Core 2 Extreme processors. Zoals de QX6850 die onder andere in de Nexoc Odin E805 zat, de Cyber System Q17 en de Schenker mySN D901C (Clevo D901C) (alleen in het Duits beschikbaar). Als je er vanuit gaat dat de QX9300 ongeveer 50% sneller is (zie boven) dan de QX9100, kun je wel verwachten dat hij ongeveer even krachtig is als de QX8650. Hoe dan ook, de mobiele processor heeft met 45 Watt een veel lagere TDP dan de QX6850 (TDP: 130Watt). Er wordt dus verwacht dat notebooks met het mobiele QX9300 platform beter zullen presteren bij hitte- en geluidsproductie dan notebooks met desktop Core 2 Extreme CPU's.

Specificaties

Op het moment van schrijven zijn er Core 2 Extreme processoren beschikbaar die zijn geproduceerd met de 65nm technologie, en anderen die met de nieuwe 45nm technologie zijn geproduceerd. De twee 65nm processoren zijn de X7800 en de X7900, ze hebben allebei 6 MB cache en een FSB van 800 MHz.
De X9000 (6MB cache, 800MHz FSB), de X9100 (6MB cache, 1066 MHz) en de QX9300 (12 MB cache, 1066 MHz FSB) zijn geproduceerd met de 45nm technologie.

De functies van alle mobiele Core 2 Extreme CPU's:

Execute Disable Bit
Intel's Execute Disable Bit functie kan helpen bij het voorkomen van bepaalde kwaadaardige buffer overflow aanvallen wanneer het gecombineerd wordt met een ondersteunend besturingssysteem.

Virtualization Technology (VT)
De Virtualisatie technologie van Intel staat hardware-assisterende versterking van meerdere omgevingen in één enkel systeem toe.  Zoals parallel gebruik van meerdere besturingssystemen die geïsoleerd van elkaar werken (met behulp van bijvoorbeeld Xen of VMWare).

64 Bit ondersteuning
Ondersteuning van 64 Bit door de CPU. Dit betekent dat de CPU 64 bit data kan verwerken. De Intel Core 2 Duo ondersteunt de AMD64 uitbreiding (gelicenceerd), wat de mogelijkheid biedt om 32 bit en 64 bit programma's op deze CPU te draaien (mits je een besturingssysteem gebruikt die 64 bit ondersteunt).

Enhanced SpeedStep Technology
Klokfrequentie en het voltage kunnen dynamisch per core veranderd worden. Als er weinig belasting is, zal de processor een algere klokfrequentie en lager corevoltage aannemen. Op deze manier wordt er energie bespaard. Door de automatische aanpassing zal je er nauwelijk prestatieverlies merken. Verder kunnen ook bepaalde delen van de CPU zelf uitgezet worden als ze niet nodig zijn, dit ook om energie te besparen.

Modellen

Intel Core 2 Duo Box

Processor nummering voor de Intel Core serie is opgedeeld  in een reeks van 4 cijfers die een letter opvolgen. Een 'Q' staat bijvoorbeeld voor quad-core. De letter geeft de catagorie van de procesor aan, die catagorie is gebaseerd op energiebehoefte en tot welke prestatiecatagorie de processor behoort.

QX...Desktop of mobiele quad-core processor met extreme performance
X...Desktop of mobiele dual-core met extreme performance
Q...Desktop quad-core high performance processor
E...Desktop energy efficient dual-core processor met een TDP ≥ 55W
T...Mobiele highly energy efficient processor met een TDP van 30-39W
L...Mobiele highly energy efficient met een TDP van 12-19W
U...Mobiele ultra high energy efficient met een TDP van ≤ 11.9W 

Het opvolgende getal is op basis van verschillende dingen, namelijk:

  • Cache
  • Front side bus
  • Kloksnelheid
  • Kracht
  • Nieuwe Intructies
  • Andere Intel technologieën

Een hoger nummer verwijst naar meerdere functies, maar kan ook betekenen dat een processor meerdere functies biedt in een bepaald aspect, maar minder in anderen.

Stromsparfunktionen

Wie schon bei den Vorgängerprozessoren können Taktfrequenz und Betriebsspannung dynamisch und pro Kern getrennt angepasst werden (Speedstep). Bei geringer Last wird dadurch der Prozessor mit einer geringen Taktfrequenz (1200 MHz bzw 800 MHz bei Santa Rosa) und Kernspannung (von 1.3 Volt bis 1.0375 Volt) betrieben und dadurch Strom gespart. Durch die automatische Anpassung sind kaum Geschwindigkeitseinbußen spürbar. Weiters kann der Prozessor Teile der CPU bei Nichtgebrauch abschalten um Energie zu sparen.

Intel Dynamic Power Coordination
Koordiniert die Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technologie und Idle Power-Management State (C-state) Übergänge unabhängig pro Kern.

Enhanced Intel Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing
Spart Strom indem Daten aus dem Cache während Inaktivität in den Hauptspeicher geschrieben werden. Dadurch kann dann die CPU Spannung abgesenkt werden.

Intel Dynamic Bus Parking
Erlaubt es auch dem Chipsatz sich bei Inaktivität herunterzufahren um Strom zu sparen.

Advanced Power Gating
Durch "Advanced Power Gating" können sich Teile des CPU Kerns abschalten. Dies kann sogar in Zeiten passieren, in denen Performance gefordert wird um das Performance pro Watt Verhältnis zu erhöhen.

Enhaned Deep C4 Sleep State
Die Kernspannung kann zusätzlich abgesenkt werden, wenn der L2 Cache ausgeschaltet ist.

Split Bus Array
Busse und Arrays sind aufgeteilt, damit sie in gewissen Betriebszuständen getrennt in einen Stromsparmodus versetzt werden können.

Core Duo versus Core 2 Duo

Verglichen mit der Core Duo (Yonah) Architektur, zeigt der Core 2 Duo (Merom) einige Vorteile. Vorallem die 64 Bit Erweiterungen ermöglichen nun den Einsatz von 64 Bit Betriebssystemen und dadurch eine Speicherausstattung von 4 GB (durch den Chipsatz begrenzt). Weiters bekam der Merom einen größeren L2 Cache und die Architektur wurde breiter ausgelegt:

  • Einen zusätzlichen "Simple Decoder"
  • Maximum Decode Rate 4+1 im Vergleich zu 3 beim Yonah Kern
  • 96 zu 80 Einträge im Reorder Buffer
  • +1 Issue Ports (6 versus 5)
  • 32 Einträge im Scheduler (versus 24)
  • Getrennte FP Units
  • 3 SSE Units (Yonah 1)
  • Eine zusätzliche Integer ALU

Weiters wurde die Pipeline von 12 auf 14 erweitert. Dadurch kann der Core 2 Duo schneller getaktet werden, wird jedoch etwas langsamer pro Takt (was jedoch durch die vorher genannten Architekturverbreiterungen aufgefangen wird). [Quelle]

In unserem direkten Performancevergleich zwischen Core Duo T2400 und Core 2 Duo T5600 zeigten die Veränderungen in den verschiedenen Benchmarks Unterschiede zwischen -0.3% und 34% (im Schnitt etwa 10%). Abwärtskompatibilität

Der Core 2 Duo vor Einführung der Santa Rosa Platform basiert noch wie der Vorgänger auf das PGA Socket-M Interface. Dadurch ist es möglich manche Notebooks von einem Core Duo auf einen Core 2 Duo aufzurüsten. Nötig hierzu ist jedoch ein Bios das den Core 2 Duo unterstützt. Außerdem darf der Prozessor nicht mit dem Mainboard verlötet sein (wie beim BGA - Ball Grid Array - Gehäuse).

Folgende Chipsätze unterstützen theoretisch einen Core 2 Duo:

Montevina Penryn Update (Centrino 2)

Am 15 Juli 2008 stellte Intel im Zuge der Centrino 2 Plattform überarbeitete Penryn Prozessoren mit FSB 1066 und verringertem TDP (Stromverbrauch) vor. Besonders die neue 25 Watt P-Klasse soll leistungsfähige Prozessoren in kleine Laptops bringen.

Penryn Update

Im Jänner 2008 führte Intel neue T9xxx und T8xxx Core 2 Duo Prozessoren auf Basis des neuen "Penryn" Kerns vor. Diese Prozessoren werden in 45nm hergestellt (die Vorgänger noch in 65nm) und bieten einen größeren Level 2 Cache (3 und 6 MB, je nach Version - derzeit). Weiters bekam Penryn eine schnellere Divisionseinheit und 47 neue SSE Befehle (SSE4 getauft). Dank des neuen Produktionsprozesses konnte Intel die Taktraten steigern (bei gleichem Stromverbrauch).

Nach ersten Messungen der c't war ein Penryn T9500 rund 5-10% schneller als ein ein gleichgetakteter Merom T7800. Bei wenigen Tests konnte die c't sogar bis zu 25% an Mehrleistung messen. Einzelne SPEC-Benchmarks des CPU2000 liefen jedoch sogar langsamer als beim Merom. Grundsätzlich führen sie die Mehrleistung (wenn messbar) hauptsächlich auf den größeren L2 Cache zurück. Am 9. Mai 2007 wurde im Zuge der 4. Centrino Generation namens Santa Rosa auch der Core 2 Duo Prozessor erneuert. Der Prozessor basiert immer noch auf dem Merom Kern, wurde jedoch um einige Stromspar- und Optimierungsfunktionen erweitert. Ausserdem braucht er nun den neuen Socket P mit 478 Pins, der jedoch nicht mehr Pin-kompatibel mit dem Socket M der älteren Core 2 Duo ist.

Im Unterschied zu den Vorgänger Core 2 Duo Prozessoren arbeiten die neuen CPUs nun mit FSB 800 (200 MHz Quad-pumped) anstatt FSB 667 (133 MHz Quad-pumped).

Dieser unterstützt nun "Dynamic Front Side Bus Switching", wobei bei geringer Prozessorlast der FSB von 200 MHz auf bis zu 100 MHz (FSB 400) abgesenkt werden kann um Energie zu sparen. Diese Absenkung betrifft jedoch nur Chipsatz und Prozessor und wird daher "virtuell" genannt. Der Core 2 Duo kann sich dank Speedstep auf minimal 1.2 GHz runtertakten. Dank dem niedrigeren (virtuellen) FSB kann sich der "Santa Rosa" Core 2 Duo auf 800 MHz heruntertakten um noch mehr Strom zu sparen.

Ein weiteres neues Feature ist das dynamische Übertakten eines Kerns namens "Dynamic Acceleration". Wenn nur ein Kern des Prozessors gefordert wird, dann kann sich der eine Kern dynamisch übertakten, während der zweite Kern in den stromsparenden C3-Modus verweilt. Dadurch kann der übertaktete Kern mit der Taktrate des nächshöheren Modells arbeiten (z.B. 2.2 statt 2.0 GHz beim T7300). Dadurch bleibt die TDP (Thermal Design Power) gleich und erfordert keine angepassten Kühllösungen.

Wenn der Prozessor gerade keine Aufgabe zum Abarbeiten hat, begibt er sich in die unterschiedliche Sparzustände (C1 bis C4/DC4). Bei Santa Rosa sorgt der neue Chipsatz dafür, das der Prozessor so lange wie mögliche im Sparzustand verbleibt (z.B. fängt er Speicheranfragen ab).

Sondermodelle

Der T7600G ist ein normaler T7600, jedoch mit frei wählbarem Multiplikator (zum Übertakten).
