So, should you buy the HONOR Magic5 Pro? Well, this phone does have a lot of competition out there. It also combines a unique set of features not many other phones have. You’re getting top-of-the-line specs, excellent display and battery life, fast wired and wireless charging, and 3D facial scanning all in the same package. Not to mention an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner and more. That being said, the biggest tradeoff here is HONOR’s UI, which needs work. It doesn’t really impact the performance as much as it stands in its own way and lacks some features that should probably be there. If you, however, want a different experience, and you don’t mind what I’ve mentioned in the software section above, the HONOR Magic5 Pro is definitely worth checking out. This phone has considerable potential.

Image quality from the Honor Magic 5 is excellent and easily rivals the Samsung, iPhone and other competitors such as the Pixel 7 Pro. It performs well in a variety of situations, including low light. There are just a couple of niggles here that stop it short of being five star, the lack of 8K video (probably not a deal breaker for most, but we need to differentiate it somehow from other similar offerings), and the fact that Portrait mode is a little bit unrealistic looking compared with others.

The magnified movies are also subpar, and there is no 8K option. Surprisingly, all 4K videos are limited to 15 minutes, which is not ideal for video creators. Finally, the GPU throttles a lot when running in peak performance, which is a thing you should have in mind if you consider competitive gaming. But even with these setbacks, the Honor Magic5 Pro is a solid offer with flagship specs and quality top to bottom. literally has everything and it’s not the most expensive offer on the market. But with all that said I loved my time with the Magic5 Pro and having had the latest flagship from Samsung for past few years, I do think that the major manufacture’s have some serious competition to worry about.

Honor could have made a different call on the front-facing camera, and a little tweaking of the camera might get the phone to reduce overexposing highlights at night. But those are two tiny, easy-to-ignore qualms in an otherwise complete package, and one by the way that is slimmer, lighter, and probably cheaper (depending on the deal you find) than the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. That's good for the U.S. because as long as this phone competes on the international stage, Samsung will have to react, and if these two continue to go head to head, that's only going to make things better.

…which is quite a shame when you realise just how much better it could’ve been. The Magic 5 Pro is actually a really good and well-rounded smartphone, with solid performance in the key aspects that most people will actually care about. This includes day-to-day usage, battery life, the speakers and display as well as the point and shoot experience with the main camera. Where it falls short though is with its MagicOS skin of Android as well as the ultrawide and periscope telephoto cameras. With the former, there was just this feeling that they would’ve been better off with something more stock Android than a heavy skin with shades of EMUI still apparent. And as for the latter, it just needs a bit more work on the software side of things if Honor really wants to challenge the likes of Samsung, Apple and Google in the camera department. Luckily for Honor then that both of these issues can be rectified in the future with OTA software updates, so the Magic 5 Pro could actually get better down the line. As for its price, the Honor Magic 5 Pro debuted in Malaysia with a RM4,299 price tag, which gets you the same 12GB+512GB model that we reviewed here. And overall, that’s actually a very fair price tag for what you’re getting: a well rounded Android flagship that has its quirks here and there. Whether it’s worth that price tag though is a different story altogether and will depend on if you’re willing to fork out even more for something more polished instead, such as a Galaxy S23 Ultra. But to give credit where credit’s due, the Honor Magic 5 Pro is a quality smartphone with a price tag that’ll make it very appealing to anyone wanting a flagship device. If you’re willing to take the road less travelled, you might just find the Magic 5 Pro right up your alley.

The Honor Magic 5 Pro is a great evolution in the series. From the unique design (we can't deny the astrophysical reference gives us a nerdgasm), to the amazing display and great camera system, this phone is a legitimate flagship. It pushes several boundaries, sporting a huge battery inside a very slim and lightweight chassis, and all in all, performs great on all fronts. The only real problem is the price and availability (okay, two problems), as getting an Honor device is not as easy as grabbing a Samsung or an Apple. At 1,199 euros the phone is not cheap, but looking at other flagships coming from the Far East, the price tag is actually within the expected margin (whatever that means). If you decide to get this phone, you won't regret your decision, it's one of the best flagships launched this year (also Best Of MWC'23 award winner).

…which is quite a shame when you realise just how much better it could’ve been. The Magic 5 Pro is actually a really good and well-rounded smartphone, with solid performance in the key aspects that most people will actually care about. This includes day-to-day usage, battery life, the speakers and display as well as the point and shoot experience with the main camera. Where it falls short though is with its MagicOS skin of Android as well as the ultrawide and periscope telephoto cameras. With the former, there was just this feeling that they would’ve been better off with something more stock Android than a heavy skin with shades of EMUI still apparent. And as for the latter, it just needs a bit more work on the software side of things if Honor really wants to challenge the likes of Samsung, Apple and Google in the camera department. Luckily for Honor then that both of these issues can be rectified in the future with OTA software updates, so the Magic 5 Pro could actually get better down the line. As for its price, the Honor Magic 5 Pro debuted in Malaysia with a RM4,299 price tag, which gets you the same 12GB+512GB model that we reviewed here. And overall, that’s actually a very fair price tag for what you’re getting: a well rounded Android flagship that has its quirks here and there. Whether it’s worth that price tag though is a different story altogether and will depend on if you’re willing to fork out even more for something more polished instead, such as a Galaxy S23 Ultra. The same can be said for the video experience, although we've seen a few zoomed videos of higher quality on other flagships. The Honor Magic5 Pro is not perfect, though it did come close. The phone has a slippery design, and the 2x digital zoom isn't as lossless as on some other phones (we mean when compared to those with 1" main cameras). The zoomed videos aren't on par, too, and there is no 8K option. Weirdly, all 4K videos are limited to 15 minutes, which is far from ideal for video creators, too. Finally, the GPU throttles a lot when running in peak performance, which is a thing you should have in mind if you consider competitive gaming. But even with these setbacks, the Honor Magic5 Pro is a solid offer with flagship specs and quality top to bottom. But with a stunner of a screen, big battery and fast charging, there’s very little not to like. With a score of 151, the Honor Magic5 Pro display has found its way to the top of the DXOMARK ranking thanks to its well-rounded and consistent performance in all the key attributes. Although the Honor Magic5 Pro did not achieve the highest score in any of the attributes that go into calculating our Display overall score, it came very close in all categories, thereby achieving the kind of well-balanced performance DXOMARK looks for when ranking smartphones — and in this case, the Honor Magic5 Pro’s performance earned it the top spot in our Display database to date. Taking a closer look at its performance, the new Honor device provided very good readability, with tuning that made it comfortable to see in all tested lighting conditions. The Honor might not have the highest peak brightness as the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max, but the Magic5 Pro managed its color and contrast better than some of its rivals. Its color was better than that of two of its direct competitors, the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra; and although it fell behind the Samsung device for video, it nonetheless provided good HDR rendering. The Magic5 Pro’s touch was smooth, reactive, and accurate; and finally, it was flicker-free and ignored ghost touches.

With this much stuff on offer, I think it’s quite obvious that it won’t come cheap, although if Honor can undercut both Apple and Samsung with the Honor Magic 5 Pro’s pricing, I think we’ll definitely be on to a winner. The Honor Magic 5 Pro is expected to arrive in the UK later in the year, with my full verdict coming soon. We don't yet have the UK price, but we do know that it will cost €899 in Europe.

Honor Magic 5 Lite è un solido medio gamma con qualcosa in più. Si caratterizza per l'ottima autonomia, l'ottimo display e la più che discreta fotocamera principale. Il software avrebbe bisogno di una svecchiata, ma al giusto prezzo (non quello di lancio) lo smartphone potrà dare molte soddisfazioni, partendo da chi vuole uno smartphone bello, con un bel display curvo che sappia farsi notare.

So, what is the HONOR Magic5 Lite? It’s quite an interesting representative of a mid-range smartphone with its strengths and compromises. What I would like to praise the device for is a wonderful curved AMOLED screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, a nice and elegant design (I personally liked the color), pleasant performance for most tasks, a sharp interface, a good main camera module and, of course, a great battery life. From the minuses – we have here a rather weak monaural sound (not in volume, but in quality) and mediocre additional cameras and front camera. If this is not critical for you, HONOR Magic5 Lite will be a pretty good purchase with a nice balance between price and features. For what we definitely want to praise the device, so it is a wonderful curved AMOLED-screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, nice and elegant design (I was personally won over by the color), pleasant for most tasks performance, lively interface, not bad main camera module and excellent battery life.

Despite some notable letdowns in the camera, software, and performance departments, the Magic 5 Lite is a solid budget Android smartphone. What it lacks in secondary cameras, the device makes up for with an impressive display. Bloated and old software alongside a stuttery chipset are largely forgotten thanks to a battery that just keeps going. The trade-offs here are worth it, in my opinion. It might not be flagship-standard but the budget device packs in plenty of features for its £250 price tag. It outperforms more expensive mid-range options in the areas that really count. And all of that is enclosed in a good-looking, reliable design. There’s not much more you could ask for. The Magic 5 Lite certainly won’t disappoint, and I have no qualms recommending it to the budget-focused consumer.

The Honor Magic5 Lite 5G is the basic model in the Magic5 series. The Magic5 Lite’s rear camera delivered a decent performance in good lighting conditions in both photos and videos, with good exposure and relatively natural colors. But the camera lacked good zoom capabilities. It also suffered from occasional focus instabilities. When taking videos, autofocus was fast, but video stabilization was not very efficient. Overall, the Magic5 Lite’s camera is very capable of taking nice landscape photos that contain good details.

So, on to my recommendation. Do I recommend the Honor Magic5 Lite? Yes, I certainly do. At this price point, the phone is a pitch-perfect performer. The new Magic5 Lite fixed only some of the Magic4 Lite's shortcomings from last year, with the display being the most significant upgrade. It's a rare flagship-grade OLED in this price range, but it's just not enough to persuade us. Pretty much all of the Magic5 Lite's competitors offer a similar display quality while being better in other areas. Honor's midranger still drags behind the competition in terms of raw performance, launches with outdated Android and judging by its predecessor, an update to Android 13 probably won't arrive this year. It has no stereo speakers, ships without a charger, supports only 40W charging (down from Magic4 Lite's 66W), camera quality is far behind the competition, still can't shoot 4K videos and we've seen more premium builds from the competition. Excellent battery life and a great display are the only things going for the Magic5 Lite and that just isn't enough.

If good looks and a gorgeous screen sit top of your smartphone wish list, the Honor Magic 5 Lite is sure to please. It has styling that can shame many pricier phones, and the build quality to match. Add in a beefy battery and a decent (though not spectacular) main camera, and you’re getting a lot of phone for your cash. The secondary snappers don’t add much value, though. The Pixel 6a remains our cut-price pick for photographers, and Honor can’t match Google’s five years of updates and security patches. Performance is merely OK, too: mobile gamers demanding high frame rates might be better served by the Nothing Phone 1. But if you spend more time in Chrome than Call of Duty, and want to go as long as possible between trips to a plug socket, this could still be a winner.

Honor Magic5 Lite Battery test

The Honor Magic5 Lite reached the top of our battery ranking, with strong showings in autonomy, charging and efficiency. Its autonomy was one of the best we’ve tested so far with more than 3 days when used moderately. Autonomy in intense usage also was impressive at nearly 2 full days, and among the best we’ve seen. When testing all use cases separately, the Magic5 Lite showed excellent autonomy, especially in video streaming and gaming. The autonomy during outdoor testing was excellent, too. The phone’s battery gauge, however, was inaccurate and proved to be the device’s major weak point in the user experience. When the display showed the battery at 20%, the true capacity was actually around 16%. The device would also shut down automatically at 1%. The charging experience was quite good, with the 40W charger taking 1 hour and 51 minutes to fully replenish the battery. A quick 5-minute charge provided a good 6 hours of autonomy on average. However, the time between 100% displayed on the screen and the true full charge was long at 36 minutes. In terms of efficiency, the device’s charge efficiency tipped to just below our database average, its discharge currents were very low across almost all use cases, meaning that the device is well-optimized. When compared with devices from the same price range ($200 – $399), the Honor Magic5 Lite came out on top with the best score so far. The autonomy and efficiency scores were excellent, the first time one device achieved top scores in both areas in this segment. The charging score was great and among the top charging performers in this segment with a 40W charger. But it was far behind its predecessor, the Magic 4 Lite, which went up to 66W.

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

Qualcomm Adreno 740:

Grafische chip voor smartphones en tablets die is geïntegreerd in de Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. Qualcomm beweert dat deze 25% sneller is dan de Adreno 730 in de Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 en de eerste benchmarks laten zien dat de GPU de Apple A16 iGPU (voorheen de snelste smartphone GPU) kan verslaan. 

Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.

High-end SoC voor smartphones die eind 2022 werd geïntroduceerd met een snelle hoofdkern op basis van een ARM Cortex-X3-architectuur die draait op maximaal 3,2 GHz. Twee andere krachtige kernen zijn gebaseerd op de A715 en ondersteunen ook alleen 64-bit toepassingen. De andere twee A710-kernen ondersteunen ook 32-bits toepassingen, net als de energiebesparende Cortex-A510-kernen. Naast de processorkernen bevat de SoC een WiFi 7-modem, een Hexagon DSP (voor AI-versnelling) en een Spectra ISP. De geïntegreerde geheugencontroller ondersteunt snel LPDDR5x-geheugen tot 4200 MHz. 5G is opgenomen in de chip met de Snapdragon X70 modem.

SD 695 5G:

Snelle mid-range ARM SoC met 8 CPU Kryo 660-kernen (twee snelle 2,2 GHz ARM Cortex-A77-gebaseerde kernen in een cluster en zes energiebesparende ARM Cortex-A55-gebaseerde kernen op 1,7 GHz) en een lagere mid-range Adreno 619 GPU. Ondersteunt alleen Wi-Fi 5 en is gemaakt in de 6 nm.
