De Cat S61 is op het eerste gezicht een telefoon voor een niche-markt. Maar hoe meer we er over nadenken hoe groter die niche wordt. Zo is de FLIR-camera handig voor tal van beroepen waaronder bouwvakkers, elektriciëns, loodgieters en vakmensen uit de isolatiebranche. De afstandsmeter is dan weer handig voor makelaars en aannemers. De luchtkwaliteitssensor is weer handig voor onder andere schilders. Tot slot zorgt de compleet waterdichte behuizing voor weer nog een doelgroep; buitensporters.

Als zakelijke smartphone voor iedere klusjesman is de Cat S61 helemaal geen verkeerd toestel. De voordelen van de luchtkwaliteitsmeter, afstandsmeter, warmtecamera en onbreekbare behuizing hoef ik niet uit te leggen. Houd er echter wel rekening mee dat als smartphone zelf de Cat S61 vergelijkbaar is met een smartphone van rond de 300 euro en het toestel ook geen lust voor het oog is. Vanuit dat perspectief is 900 euro best een hoop geld. Tenzij je het weer zakelijk kunt afschrijven.

There's really not much to see with the S61 aside from the laser measuring and FLIR camera. Both work decently but not nearly as well as bespoke gadgets for those purposes. What really kills this handset is its middling features and premium price. We know its a rugged phone so there are trade-offs but we feel this handset doesn't compel us to cough up the price of admission.

Clearly aware it’s onto a winning format, Bullit has chosen not to rock the boat on the S60, refining rather than rethinking the design of the S61. Highlights include a more powerful thermal imaging sensor, laser measuring tool and ambient air sensor that will act as canary in a coal mine.

There’s not much else to crit on the Cat S61. It’s a workhorse built for those for whom ‘light’ should not refer to neither their beer or smartphone. The Cat S61 is the best one in the range by far, pushing it from a mid-range muddler to a strong performer where you don’t need to sacrifice processing power nor screen quality.

Overall, it’s great to see a phone fill a niche that isn’t being filled by many other manufacturers. For people that work in extreme conditions, this is a good option (or even if you’re just tough on your devices). It isn’t pretty and it will cost a whopping 899 Euros ($999 USD) when it launches in Q2, but this might be in the running for one of the best rugged phones out there.

Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.
