Heb je een iPhone 15 of 14? Dan is het waarschijnlijk niet nodig om naar de iPhone 16 over te stappen, tenzij je enthousiast bent over de nieuwe knoppen. Voor Apple Intelligence hoef je de upgrade nog niet te overwegen, want die functie laat nog even op zich wachten. Tegen die tijd zijn er waarschijnlijk weer nieuwe modellen, hopelijk mét een verversingssnelheid van 100 Hz of meer. As usual, the answer will depend on your situation. If you’re going to upgrade, I think it makes the most sense for iPhone 14 or earlier generations, as you’ll see a much bigger difference than anyone using an iPhone 15. Even for those with a 15, it might be tempting to jump in order to gain new features like the Action Button, Camera Control and Apple Intelligence. At the time of writing, I can only comment on the first two, and they are a mixed bag overall. There’s no doubt the iPhone 16 does all the basics right, but is that enough in 2024? I’d say unless your heart is set on using Apple Intelligence, you’re better off waiting for the next generation or getting a now more affordable iPhone 15.

It features that bold new look, gets the Action and Camera Control buttons plus there's that stupendously fast A18 processor and upgraded rear cameras. The tougher design should also help keep it looking box-fresh for longer and it comes with Wi-Fi 7, eSIM technology for faster set-up (most UK networks now offer this service) and the latest iOS 18 operating system. There's no price rise in 2024, the wireless charging is quicker and there's a bigger battery inside which means you won't have to worry about things running flat. So yes, other than that screen complaint, this is the ultimate iPhone upgrade that comes highly recommended.

I’ve had a fantastic time using it over this review period, and out of all the new iPhones available this year, it’s the one I ordered as my next personal smartphone. The base model iPhone has often felt like a notable downgrade from its Pro counterparts, but that’s not the case this year. Whether it’s the design, performance, camera, software, or extra hardware features like the Action button and Camera Control, you don’t make any severe compromises when choosing the iPhone 16 this year instead of the iPhone 16 Pro. So long as they can get used to the 60Hz screen and the lack of an always-on display (they will), I think most people will be hard-pressed to justify buying one of the more expensive iPhones over the iPhone 16. If you’re in the market for a new iPhone this year, this is the one to get.

As a content creator and a photographer, I feel these new iPhones are tailor-made for me. I’ve seen people online saying that it’s not a huge upgrade from the 14 Pro, which sure, the 14 Pro is an amazing phone and offered a nice jump up in camera quality at the time and still has very capable photography optics. However, it’s still missing much of the pro software and video support that Apple has added over the past two generations. I was on the ground for the 'It's Glowtime' event at Apple HQ in Cupertino, California, and as Tim Cook wrapped up the keynote I dashed out of the Steve Jobs Theater and made a beeline for the media area and the iPhone 16. First, the colors are fantastic and best described simply as 'fun', at least for most shades. Ultramarine (a mix of blues, but don't call it blue), pink, and teal all come together to freshen up the iPhone palette, and look delightful. I think Pro buyers will be a little upset with the vibrant options here, though, given the more neutral shades on offer for the Pro and Pro Max.

Apple A18 GPU: De Apple A18 GPU bevat vijf kernen, hardware ray tracing en mesh-ondersteuning. Apple stelt dat de A18 GPU tot 40% sneller is dan de A16 GPU in de iPhone 15. In onze benchmarks bevindt de grafische eenheid zich tussen de oude A16 GPU en de A17 Pro GPU met 6 kernen.

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

A18: Een krachtige smartphone-processor en formele opvolger van de A16 SoC. Dit nieuwe lid van de Apple A processorreeks heeft 2 prestatie-kernen en 4 efficiënte kernen, samen met een 35 TOPS NPU en de 5-kernige A18 GPU. Multi-threaded benchmarks plaatsen hem in dezelfde buurt als de Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 en de Dimensity 9300.

Grote schermformaten laten hogere resoluties toe. Details zoals letters zijn groter. Anderzijds is het energieverbruik lager bij kleine schermdiagonalen en de toestellen zijn kleiner, lichter en goedkoper.
